A New View

by Sandra Oakley, Social Work student, University of South Alabama.

I chose to intern at FPCA because I had always heard of people being homeless, but never experienced it first-hand. This internship is an important part of learning about the community I am preparing to serve. What I've learned is that families in a housing crisis are people just like me.
I had always heard the stories that homeless people are drug addicts, lazy and do not want anything out of life, but that is not true. The families that I have personally gotten to know are totally opposite. They work hard, go to school and are just down on their luck. I am really glad that Family Promise of Coastal Alabama gave me a chance to experience homelessness. I'm ready now to go wherever my work takes me, dispelling myths and advocating for families along the way.

Good Grades

According to Seattle University's Project on Family Homelessness (2014), children who are homeless face a myriad of academic challenges including being held back and failing to meet statewide reading and math standards. FPCA makes a difference in children's lives. In the first quarter of this school year, one of our kids made the A/B honor roll and another is a proud member of ROTC!

Project Serve 2017

FPCA could not function without community support. On October 20, this thoughtful group of people brought items for the festival, cleaned and redecorated our bulletin boards. Thank you.
