The First Lady of Healthy Kids

We’re super excited to share the inside scoop to some big news. And we mean BIG! Next month we’re celebrating our 5th anniversary with a special spring issue featuring The First Lady, whose own Let’s Move! campaign is also celebrating its 5th birthday. And we’re giving you an exclusive preview of our interview with Mrs. Obama! Plus we share some heart-healthy recipes for you to cook with your families (something Mrs. Obama urges everyone to do), a food festival just for kids featuring Chef Bill Yosses and cooking personality Gail Simmons, and more. Here’s a preview to a very special year—and we’re just getting started!

Warmly,

ChopChop’s Exclusive Interview with First Lady Michelle Obama!

Mrs. Obama sat down with ChopChop kid reporters to talk about learning to cook, messing up a recipe (it happens to everyone!), getting her daughters to try new foods, and more. The exclusive interview appears in our spring issue. Get a sneak peek and read the full Q&A at www.chopchopmag.org/flotus.

Quick & Easy Tomato Sauce

We talked with the First Lady about why it’s so important for kids to learn to cook: besides the fact that home cooking is healthier, it’s something you can do as a family, and most importantly, it’s fun! Here’s a great first recipe to cook together – our Quick and Easy Tomato Sauce. This all-purpose tomato sauce is rich in lycopene, which is good for your heart. (And it’s tasty, which is good for your dinner.)

The Lunar New Year

And there’s more to celebrate! Many throughout the Asian world will be commemorating the Chinese or lunar new year starting on February 19th. Celebrate the Year of the Sheep with a warm bowl of congee. Try adding some red beans and peanuts for a traditional Chinese New Year Laba Congee, symbolizing good fortune, long life, and a fruitful harvest.

Kids Food Festival

We’re kicking off our 5th birthday with Chef Bill Yosses, former White House Pastry Chef and ChopChop Cooking Lab Director, along with Gail Simmons, Food & Wine Special Projects Director and Top Chef judge at the Kids Food Festival on March 1st. Join us at our cooking-themed birthday celebration where we’ll demonstrate how to make a heart-healthy bean soup and invite you to participate in a “vinaigrette lab” and create a “party on a stick” salad.
