The War of Art cannot be quarantined. The Creative Underground knows this. There are only winners and losers. They will show us how to win.
Dear Mr. Nick;
Be warned. THE MAN is always forcing the various pieces of your life into rigid compartments. You don’t realize it, but this is one of his greatest tricks to get you to neglect you art. It is very subtle.
This is what we mean. THE MAN starts by whispering in your ear something very obvious; that there is a time for art-making, and there is a time not for art-making. A harmless statement right? Wrong! THE MAN never stops where he should. He then goes on to cleverly suggest that, “If you are doing your art, you must be neglecting something else.” Do you see his trap?
Then because you want to be a responsible, upstanding, person you think, “Of course! I do not see my little old grandmother nearly enough.” You go see her. And in this way, THE MAN keeps bringing up distraction after distraction (even legitimate ones!) that keep you from your art. Something always comes up. Soon, your brain makes a very dangerous and direct comparison. It flashes like a bright-red neon sign against the darkest corner of your brain. “ART = SELFISH”
We at The Creative Underground are here to free you of this hang up. THE MAN has not considered the concept of MASTERY. On MASTERY, we can learn something from the Zen Buddhists. They pick an art, archery for example, and they pursue that thing to complete MASTERY. They shoot arrows at a target until their stance, draw, release, breath, and mindset is so completely optimized that they never miss. Never. This is MASTERY. They call this MASTERY, “The artless art,” because they have transcended the art itself. Their art becomes virtuous. You see?
Learn from this. By achieving MASTERY in your path of art you will discover a dimension of meaning and truth that you cannot discovered anywhere else. It will be something beyond you. This is a worth pursuit.
