OPCFHK wishes you all a merry and eco-friendly Christams! Together, we continue to safeguard our local and regional biodiversity!

Since COVID-19 began there has been a huge increase in our use of plastic and disposable goods.  This non-biodegradable waste is building up in our landfills and even our oceans. As new year approaching, we should start thinking about the impact all this waste will have on the environment and what changes we need to make.

3 essential items for on the go

When trying to go plastic-free, the no.1 step is to be prepared. There are 3 essential items that you could consider keeping in your bag; a reusable food container, coffee cup and bag. If you buy a coffee every morning on your commute to work and used a reusable cup instead, you would save 260 coffee cups. Over 10 years, that’s 2600 coffee cups! Don’t underestimate the power of the little things.

Cook at home

Takeaways usually come with a lot of plastic and paper packaging. Next time you order a takeaway, opt for no straws or plastic cutlery to avoid unnecessary waste. If you have the time, cooking at home can reduce your waste even more and is often the healthier option!

Invest in a reusable mask

Since the pandemic began, we have seen a massive increase in the use of disposable face masks. Think how many masks have been used globally during the pandemic. Did you know that these masks can take up to 450 years to degrade? Single-use masks are being littered along coastlines and entering our oceans which is posing a serious threat to marine wildlife and its ecosystems. Reusable facemasks are just as effective if they are cleaned after every use!

Although we need to fight for systemic change, we still believe individual action is very important (especially with the festive season around the corner)!!
Climate change causes excessive melting of glaciers and sea ice, which destroy the habitat of gentoo penguins. Nonetheless, overfishing is starving the species as they may have to swim farther to find food; many weak ones die along the way due to exhaustion! Want to help gentoo penguins and other species that are threatened by climate change and other threats? OPCFHK sincerely invites you to send your blessings to wild animals by donating to the "Conservation Hero Support Programme" this Christmas.

As low as HK$3.3 per day, you can choose the environmental issue and species you are most concerned (including meerkat, giant tortoise, gentoo penguin, spotted seal and two-toed sloth). You can show your support by either one-off or monthly online donation. Your donation will directly contribute to our conservation efforts, such as funding research projects in Asia and our local marine life stranding response programme. From now until 31 January 2021, those who join a monthly donation plan with $300 or above will receive a Christmas limited edition welcome gift penguin coin purse* as a token of appreciation.

*Supply of the gifts is limited and available only while stocks last.
