Call for artists!

9 more days until applications are due for the 2014 Fire Dancing Expo. Remember, this show isn't just for professionals. The point is to showcase the artists at different levels because we all started somewhere.  Let's face it -- even "meh" fire dancing is impressive. It's great for the audience to be able to appreciate the build in skill and technique over the course of the show.Get some friends together and give it a whirl!!

Fire Jam! Tonight!!

Join us at Cupid's Span (the Bow and Arrow Sculpture that sticks out of the ground on the water at Folsom Street where it hits Embarcadero) from 7 until we get shut down Thursday January 9. Details can be found on the Faceboook Secret group (ask around to get added) or you can check out this Meetup
Bring LEDs to use in case the fire gets shut down. Don't have lights and need some?
  • We love our awesome LED PodPoi for serious hobbyists which you can purchase here
  • For those not sure they want to make such a big investment, try these lower end Spin Balls LED Poi which don't use rechargeable batteries, aren't as bright and don't have as many color combinations but are soft on impact and great for kids and beginners just exploring the practice for the first time.
  • For those staff artists out there looking for some fun glow, check out these Flowlight LED Staves which we also love

Supporting Practice
Some thoughts to help along the way...

Last issue, we wrote a bit about getting more sleep to support your practice. This issue, we wanted to take a moment to remind you of Flowology Mindset Number 2: Choose your language consciously and make it empowering.

Here's an interesting video on what might be described as discussing the necessary aspects of failure and the positive results that ensue. The first few minutes were quite powerful and mostly unrelated to Honda itself and then the story at 7:45 offers one of the best reframes ever about Edison and the lightbulb: "I never failed -- it just didn't work 10,000 times..." and then 10,001, it lit up.

Along those lines, we're inviting you to consider the difference between criticism and feedback and how these ideas might related to marginalizing vs tolerance of differences. Perhaps those are lofty thoughts to put into your poi practice... and... perhaps you'll find more confidence in asking for feedback rather than taking someone's criticism. Read a bit about our thoughts on Criticism vs. Feedback and The Ego of Performance to help support the mental aspects of your performance.

Beginner Poi Performance Boot Camp!

We are very excited to be creating a large group choreography piece for the 2014 Fire Dancing Expo. This performance will be fun, comedic, a good workout and overall, early intermediate in poi skill so it's perfect for people who want to get on the stage and experience performance without having to take on direction, choreography, vision and other Director and Producer roles, not to mention all the paperwork that is bypassed. It's not too late to join us -- class starts at the end of this month, so check it out. If you're interested, be sure to email GlitterGirl directly for the password to get information about the full vision of the performance.

If you're wondering what past performances have looked like, here's a few videos from various student poi performances over the years:

Speaking of videos, here are a few more we recently added plus an oldie but goodie!
