Back to School News & Updates

Last week, we had the pleasure of meeting our newest kindergarten scholars and welcoming back our returning first, second and third graders.  We now serve 216 scholars in grades K-3 and we could not be more excited to begin our third year.

As we come back together for another school year, the national headlines have served as a reminder of the importance of our work.  As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
Here at Springfield Prep, we are energized to reengage with our students and help to develop their academic skills, intellectual curiosity, and sense of purpose and justice. In them we see the next generation of engaged citizens and leaders - their potential is limitless.

I am pleased to provide news and updates as this school year begins.  We hope to see you during the year!

It Starts with Teachers and Leaders

Growing Our Leadership Team
We are thrilled to announce that one of our wonderful 2nd grade teachers from last year, Jessica Yiannos, is our new Associate Director of Curriculum & Instruction.  Jess brings five years of classroom teaching experience and a particular passion and expertise for math instruction to our leadership team.  Read more about Jess here.  We are also excited to have a number of new leaders at the helm of our grade level teams and departments: Shawna Mitchell, Winslow Carroll and Brittanie McGregor as Grade Level Chairs; Raheem Allen as Dean of Students; and Nora Verni as Student Supports Coordinator.
Professional Development
Since early August, our teachers and staff have been hard at work, participating in professional development and collaborating to ensure that we would be ready for our scholars on day one.  Our team has engaged in practice-based classroom management sessions, content area study, lesson planning clinics, book groups, and team-specific retreats.  This year, our professional development focused primarily on lesson rigor with the goal of developing a common vision of rigor so we can push ourselves and each other to design rigorous instruction for our students.  As our students have shown us their incredible abilities, it's our job to further develop our practice to help propel their growth.

And Ends with Our Scholars

2016-17 Results
The 2017-18 school year is the first that our scholars will take MCAS and academic results from the 2016-17 school year show our students thriving academically. Among the highlights: on the ANet test, a rigorous, standards based assessment used by many district and charter schools in Massachusetts and nationally, our second graders ranked 1st out of 49 schools using the assessment in math and 8th out of 115 schools in ELA.  We are so proud of our students and their dedicated teachers for this extraordinary work.
Growing Our Arts Program
Led by Elijah Naylor, our music program continues to be a student- and family- favorite and our end-of-year concert last spring was a great way to celebrate our budding musicians and performers.  This year, third graders will continue to develop their instrumental abilities by learning to play the recorder.
This year, third graders begin taking art classes with Kim Lockwood, our new art teacher.  We are also adding an after-school Art Club to provide even more access to the arts for our students!  We look forward to sharing student art work throughout the year.
We love finding ways to get supporters of our work involved.  Please let us know if you would like to visit the school or get involved by volunteering, contributing, or serving in another capacity.  We hope to see you soon and wish you the best this coming school year!
