Simply Testable Updates #97: Guest Blog, Cold Emailing Results, Team Features

This is the 97th of weekly progress updates on the development of Simply Testable, your professional automated web frontend testing service providing one-click testing for your entire site.

This week has been focused on increasing use of the service and building in some new team features.

Cold Emailing Campaign Results
I mentioned in last week's newsletter that I had started a cold email campaign where I contacted relevant businesses via email to introduce them to the service.

It's been a week now since the first phase of that campaign finished which allows me to analyse the results.

Emails sent: 175
Clicks through to our testing system: 26 (15% CTR)
Accounts created as a direct result: 2
Hours spent: 10

A CTR of 15% is not that bad for a relatively-generic email which, in most cases, was sent to a generic contact email address but I'd like to increase the CTR in the next phase.

Using GoSquared real-time analytics I saw that many of those who clicked through from the email went on to run a test of their company website. Most tests were one-off events and didn't appear to result in repeat interest.

For two accounts created as a direct result of the campaign from about 10 hours of work, this doesn't look to be the most effective means of acquiring new users.

Guest Blogging
I wrote Simply Testable: What It Is, How We Got Here, Challenges We’ve Faced and Where We’re Going, a guest blog post for Lucy's Web Designs.

It was great fun to write a post covering what we do and how we got where we are.

Promoting The Service
I've been adding Simply Testable to various sites that either exist solely to promote new services or act as a directory for services.

I grabbed a list of places to submit your startup and submitted Simply Testable to some of those that were relevant.

Many such submissions saw no new users whatsoever whereas others brought in some passers-by: 65 56 20

These numbers are only for those who were referred directly by the above services to our main marketing site.

Team Features
I've been building in team features to our backend systems, none of which is yet ready to use.

Anyone with an account will be able to created a team and invite other Simply Testable users to join their team. Everything is shared within a team, allowing an organisation to create a single shared paid account and allowing people within the organisation to share test results.

I'm not far enough into these changes to know when they might go live but this time next week I'll be in a much better position to have an idea about that.

Upcoming Work
Over the next week I'll focus on adding the team features as well as examining further ways to promote the service.

As always, if you'd like to see web testing you find boring handled automatically for you, add a suggestion or vote up those that interest you. This really helps.
