Mani is one of the most beautiful regions of Greece.
Located in the South, the Penninsula of Mani starts from the town of Kalamata, about 2.5 hours by car from Athens, and extends down the length of the towering mountain range of mythical Taygetos. The combination of this breathtaking mountain and its meeting points with the Aegean sea, as it slopes down to coastal villages and idyllic beaches make Mani a most precious destination, a verdant paradise for travelers who are ready to veer off the beaten path. One of the most remarkable such travelers was the noted British author, Patrick Leigh Fermor, who wrote the book "Mani" and made this land his home. Often likened to Tuscany, Mani has also become home to an alternative group of Europeans who have moved here drawn by the stunning beauty of the place and the pace of living. Local livelihood depends on olive farming and animal husbandry, tourism being a late development. One of the most interesting things about being a tourist in Mani is local life which goes on as usual even during tourist season. You are likely to share the path with many a goat and sheep, and you can't help but walk through the endless olive groves, olive being one of the only trees that can survive without much water. Mani is a trekking paradise as there are endless paths on the side of the mountain connecting small villages, byzantine churches, and deep gorges with imposing mountain tops. Bike riders relish the nature routes as well, and there is a special bike-only lane connecting the coastal villages of Stoupa to Agios Nikolaos, through one of the most scenic bike routes you will encounter anywhere. Swimming is of course the quintessential activity here, as there are few joys in the world that compare to swimming in crystal clear blue waters and endless charming beaches, both rocky and sandy. There is no wonder Mani is becoming a secret magnet for yogis and meditators from around the world. The profound beauty and tranquility nature offers in Mani through all seasons, make it an ideal location for profound and healing practice.
