Video-based materials for professional learning

In several of our research alliances, REL West staff have been working with our district and school partners to develop engaging video with supplementary materials. Read on for two examples, one on academic conversations and the other on eighth- to ninth-grade transition.

Perhaps these videos will be useful to you in professional learning events in 2016. We hope so, and we'd love to hear from you about how you have used them in your setting. Do you have suggestions for other research-based materials that you need? Let us know.

New study on AZ & UT pilots sheds light on using student learning objectives in teacher evaluations

Photo: Teacher with studentsWith approximately 30 states now adopting (or planning to adopt) teacher evaluation policies that include student learning objectives (SLOs), state and district leaders are trying to determine the best level of guidance and oversight to support these efforts. A new study offers evidence about this approach through research on the pilot implementation of teacher evaluations in Arizona and Utah that include SLOs.  READ MORE>>

How can teachers guide each student in meaningful ways through academic conversations? A new 17-minute video, discussion guide, and resource list is intended for teachers, coaches, and administrators working with English learners and other diverse learners. Promoting Success in the First Year of High School

Photo: Front of high schoolThis 19-minute video is intended for administrators, counselors, and district staff leading student engagement and dropout prevention efforts. The video draws from experiences and findings from researchers, practitioners, and students. It begins with an overview of the challenges facing ninth-grade students and then focuses on promising practices to help students manage the transition and stay on track to graduate. READ MORE>>

Advanced Course Completion in Magnet and Comprehensive High Schools (Clark County, Nevada)

Does the relationship between a student's prior achievement and the likelihood of completing an advanced course differ between magnet and comprehensive high schools?
