The Regional Educational Laboratory West (REL West) at WestEd was recently awarded a new five-year contract (2012-2017) by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences to support improvement in education through the use of high-quality data and research evidence among education practitioners and decision makers in the West Region (Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah).
Based on ongoing needs assessment, REL West has established the following four regional priorities:
Increasing college and career readiness and success
Strengthening educator effectiveness
Accelerating achievement among English learners
Strengthening school climate and student achievement in low-performing schools
Working through eight regional research alliances (see right) comprising school districts, state agencies, and other support providers, REL West is providing research and analytic technical support to alliance members as they define pressing education issues in their locale and develop strategies to address them. Lessons learned, research findings, and tools developed through this work will be shared with the broader education community through events, our website, and a periodic REL West email newsletter.
"This is an exciting opportunity for REL West to partner with stakeholder groups in the region at all stages of the education improvement process, and over time," says Gary Estes, Chief Program Officer. "These collaborative projects will generate a deeper understanding of the issues and allow for repeated cycles of developing and testing strategies for improvement, evaluating outcomes, and refining our approach."
