"Now, more than ever, we believe that it is important to amplify our shared laments and shared commitments, as people of faith, to work towards climate justice."

Video: For the Love of Creation

On Earth Day 2019, Christian leaders from across Canada joined together to issue a call to climate action. Their collective message is clear: the global climate crisis has reached a critical stage and requires an urgent moral and spiritual response.

Created by the Canadian Council of Churches, KAIROS, and Citizens for Public Justice (CPJ), the #ForTheLoveOfCreation video collaboration highlights the need for urgent action by Canadians – and the Canadian government – on climate change.

Released April 22, 2019, a day marking both Earth Day and Easter Monday, the video highlights the need for urgent action in the name of the One who brings peace and right relations to all of creation.

In response to a report by scientists at Environment and Climate Change Canada that noted that Canada is warming at twice the rate of the global community, CPJ released a press release reiterating our call for a just transition towards a decarbonized economy.

Give it up for the Earth!, now in its third year, was featured in an article in the National Observer, which explained how Christians across Canada are demonstrating their support for increased federal government action on climate change.

This year, people of faith in 155 communities across Canada participated in the Give it up for the Earth! campaign. Even Catherine McKenna, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, took part!

In the Spring 2019 edition of the Catalyst, the Green Economy Network's Bruno Dobrusin emphasized the need to mobilize society and governments to take bold steps to stop the expansion of fossil fuel production while addressing socio-economic inequalities.

And on our website, Lisa Deveau, CPJ's social work intern, outlined 7 lifestyle changes that youth can take to reduce their carbon footprints.

Finally, in addition to our collaboration with KAIROS and the Canadian Council of Churches, CPJ’s Karri Munn-Venn reflected on Earth Day and the urgent need to move from words to actions, so that Earth Day 2020 – the 50th anniversary of the occasion – will be truly worthy of celebration.
