Summer Reading Program
Newsletter: September 2012
Over 8 weeks this summer, volunteers from 4 area churches helped 28 Chin students improve their skills and get excited about reading! Twice a week, the students would come to the CRM office at Basswood where they would keep track of how many books they had read to volunteers, out loud.
After completing 10 books, students could select a prize from the “Big Red Box.” Rochelle Webb, organizer of this summer program, said that it was exciting to see the substantial improvement in the students reading skills over the summer, as well as their love of reading develop and grow. She also loves that the program creates positive interactions for the Chin students with Americans as well as opportunities for the American volunteers to encourage and show the love of Christ to the kids.
Several volunteers are a part of a women’s Bible study group who do this together over the summer as a ministry. The reading program wrapped up with a special celebration day where each student was given 3 books to keep and treated to a pizza party with a special appearance by Beauty, the miniature pony.
At the close of its 2nd year, the summer reading program continues to be a wonderful part of CRM’s mission to equip our Chin brothers and sisters and encourage them in Christ.
We are thankful to Rochelle and her team of volunteers for making it possible!
