Summer Reading Program

Newsletter: September 2012

Reading ProgramOver 8 weeks this summer, volunteers from 4 area churches helped 28 Chin students improve their  skills and get excited about reading!  Twice a week, the students would come to the CRM office at Basswood where they would keep track of how many books they had read to volunteers, out loud.

After  completing 10 books, students could select a prize from the “Big Red Box.”  Rochelle Webb, organizer of this summer program, said that it was exciting to see the substantial improvement in the students reading skills over the summer, as well as their love of reading develop and grow.  She also loves that the program creates positive interactions for the Chin students with Americans as well as opportunities for the American volunteers to encourage and show the love of Christ to the kids.

Several volunteers are a part of a women’s Bible study group who do this together over the summer as a ministry.  The reading program wrapped up with a special celebration day where each student was given 3 books to keep and treated to a pizza party with a special appearance by Beauty, the miniature pony.

At the close of its 2nd year, the summer reading program continues to be a wonderful part of CRM’s mission to equip our Chin brothers and sisters and encourage them in Christ.
We are thankful to Rochelle and her team of volunteers for making it possible!

HandshakeCulture Corner: "Hello!" in Chin

Most Chin do not say hello when they greet you.  Instead, they shake hands.

If you are a person of authority, such as a teacher, pastor, or the elderly, the adults will use a "double handshake."

This is where they place their left hand on their right elbow as they are shaking your hand.

If they do say a word of greeting, they say "Na ei cang maw (pronounced naw aye tczang mah)?", which is literally translates to "Have you eaten?"

Becky HeadshotA Note from Our Director

This newsletter is going out both to people in the Chin Community and to friends of the Chin in the broader American Community.

Chin Community: I would like to share events that are happening in your churches and in your lives.  So please send me pictures and news that you are proud of, and news about Burma and Malaysia that you want Americans to know.

Our logo was designed a couple of years ago by Bruce Kirby, a volunteer from FBC of Flower Mound.  He designed several, and then we asked several young Chin people to pick the one they liked the best. The logo you see at the top of this newsletter is the winner. Thank you, Bruce, for everything.

Much thanks to Ryan Jackson who has made this newsletter possible.  He thinks he started Acceleron Learning (www.acceleronlearning.com) as a hot new money-making venture. He just doesn't know that he started it so that I could use all his expertise for the Chin!   Ryan, you are the best!
