November at Fougou Jazz

Wednesday 6 November Wendy Kirland Quartet

Pianist, singer and Hammond organ player, Wendy will perform music representing jazz piano divas – including Diana Krall, Eliane Elias, Blossom Dearie and Nina Simone, and others deserving attention – such as Shirley Horn, Dena Derose, Carol Welsman and Tania Maria.
Described as "the unsung heroine of British Jazz" by esteemed jazz critic Ian Mann and "mellow and stylish" by Clive Davis of the Sunday Times, Wendy will be performing songs from her album which contains fresh arrangements of songs made famous by jazzwomen who started out as pianists then learned to serenade the audience too, as Wendy has done. Wendy tells the story of these women and how they inspired her to strive to become the UK's leading exponent of jazz piano and voice, with equal merit in both.

Wendy is joined by a band who have performed with the UK's top jazz players. On guitar, Pat Sprakes cut his jazz teeth with Tony Kofi and Darius Brubeck and has performed for Robben Ford. Pat is an excellent accompanist as well as a clear and melodic soloist whose influences include Wes Montgemery and George Benson. With Paul Jefferies on double bass and Steve Wyndham on drums.
“One of the great unsung heroines of British Jazz – the lucid warmth of her singing is complemented by her highly accomplished piano playing” - The JazzMann  More details and booking.

Wednesday 13 November Daniel Karlsson Trio

The Daniel Karlsson trio’s music is described as distinctive and extrovert. The band adopts the standard piano trio format, but the music is far from being formulaic with influences such as 60s jazz, club music, dance and electronica, soul and pop clearly evident, but with a clear Nordic scent of EST. It makes for great listening. All the music is penned by Daniel Karlsson. The Trio have, since their album debut Das Taxibåtin September 2013, established themselves as one of the most interesting bands in Swedish and European jazz.
They achieved a hat-trick of awards with their sophomore release Fusion for Fish, released in August 2014. The album ended up winning the Swedish Radio’s Jazz Group of the Year Award 2014, Swedish jazz magazine OJ’s Golden Disc 2015 as well as the Swedish Jazz Grammy 2015.
Daniel Karlsson is a member of the Magnus Öström Band and you can tell instantly that there’s a strong rhythmic component to this music with a modern, metronomic and hypnotic drum beat to many tracks that suggests a family lineage back to E.S.T. as well as the the rich Nordic heritage in jazz piano.
The Daniel Karlsson Trio are: Daniel Karlsson – piano & keyboards. Christian Spering – double bass. Fredrik Rundqvist – drums & percussion.
“Many bands are described as being a ‘Power Trio’ and, to my ears, none fit the description better than this award-winning Swedish band.” Review of live gig at Jazz Cafe, Newcastle Sep. 2018  More details and booking
