John Pearce Quartet
Churston Golf Club
Sadly we have had to postpone the Maiuko Quintet, scheduled for this Wednesday, as the piano player sliced off the top of a finger and, on doctors orders, can't play for 6 weeks. The band felt that as he was such an integral part of the band they would not be able to find and rehearse a suitable replacement in time. We are hoping to re-schedule this concert sometime next year.
This means our next concert will be on October 23 with John Pearce Quartet that will feature heartfelt renditions of classic jazz standards by violin virtuoso John Pearce.
Touring his debut album, John will be joined by the award-winning David Newton - piano (who has played with Alan Barnes, Clark Tracey, Art Themen), Will Harris - bass (Moonlight Saving Time, Emily Wright & The Royals) and Ian Matthews - drums (Kasabian, K-Passa)
John Pearce has been exciting British jazz audiences with his impassioned performances and technical brilliance. Known for his emotive sound and mercurial energy, he improvises with distinctive melodic invention and clarity. His major influences include Paul Desmond, Charlie Parker, Keith Jarrett, Jeff Hamilton and Wynton Marsalis.
'The lineup features a long-hoped-for collaboration, too. “David Newton heard me play and approached me to do some playing together, probably around 10 years ago now,” John Pearce added. “He has been a musical mentor to me, and a great source of inspiration and encouragement. I became friends with Will from playing in jam sessions around Bristol. He provides a wonderful foundation for the music, and is one of the most melodic soloists on his instrument that I have worked with. Ian too, I first met at a Bristol jam session: I remember he had injured his hand, so was drumming one-handed but still out-playing everyone. He always brings a propulsive and dynamic energy to the music.' somethingelsereviews.com 'just friends' album review
