Happy New Year to you all and welcome to a new programme of exciting live jazz for 2020 in Torbay and Exeter.
For those of you who have already seen our new February through to April leaflet, we are going to start with an immediate change. Our first gig in Torbay on February 5 has been changed as the original artists have had to cancel all their southwest gigs. In their stead we have great pleasure in presenting the Martin Dale Quartet ft. Derek Nash.
Wednesday 5 February Martin Dale Quartet ft. Derek Nash. Torbay.
British Jazz Award-winning Derek Nash – bandleader, composer, arranger, record producer and engineer and full-time member of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Orchestra since 2004– is one of the UK’s busiest jazz musicians. He is leader of six bands, each with its own unique sound and featuring some of the top jazz musicians in the UK today. He is also a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion.
Martin Dale is probably the leading South West saxophonist and one of its busiest and most popular. He runs his own quartet and appears regularly as a guest soloist. He played tenor sax with the John Burch Octet and is also a member of the London based group “Sax Appeal” and “Jack Bruce Blues Experience”. More details and tickets.
Monday 17 February Nick Maclean Quartet ft. Brownman Ali. Exeter.
Led by the 26 year old star of Toronto’s jazz piano community, Nick Maclean, this foursome delivers jazz between the two poles of thoughtful introspection and powerhouse performance, taking influences from Herbie Hancock’s primordial 1960’s Blue Note era recordings, while paying tribute to some of the greatest improvisers in jazz history. The quartet features Trinidadian-born trumpet player Brownman Ali who stands at the forefront of innovation in the Canadian jazz community.
