Exhibition Day - Saturday, 13 February

On Saturday, 13th February, we're having our first Exhibition Day! These are Saturdays where we open the space to the public, with plenty of things to do and see and talk about.

And we need your help! If you have projects you want to show off, activities you're willing to do with people, or you just want to get out something you're working on and work on it while people wander around the space, this is the best time to do it.

Plus, we'll be running our Useless Machine Workshop. Learn how to build this delightful little machine that automatically turns itself off. Can you make it stay on? Find out for only £15!

Join us from 10am until 3pm and show off how awesome Hackspace members are!

Vote on vaping in the space

The Hackspace rules are currently under consultation with the membership. If you have been a member for the past few months, you would have received an email detailing the process and how to consult. (If you haven't received this information, please email the Trustees at trustees@nottinghack.org.uk for more detail.)

During this consultation, one of the parts of the proposed new rules - to ban vaping in the Hackspace - has been heavily discussed, with several people putting forward arguments both for and against the practice. You can see the discussion on this GitHub pull of the rules, but please do not make any further comments at this time.

Because this discussion is very polarised and we want to make certain all members are involved, it was decided to call a general vote on whether or not vaping should be permitted within the Hackspace.

All our current members will be emailed a link to an OpaVote poll on Friday, 5th February. The voting period will run for 7 days, and the results will be made available as soon as possible after the vote has closed. The results of the vote will be taken into account when the Trustees redraft the rules after the member consultation period has ended.

In order to make certain you receive the voting email, please ensure that the email address you have in HMS is up to date. You can log into HMS and check by clicking your name once you have logged in.

Any trustee can be contacted about this vote with any questions you may have, and general consultation on the Hackspace rules is still ongoing, and will close on Thursday, 3 March.

Join us at Light Night!

On Friday, 5th February, we'll be a part of Light Night, Nottingham's amazing night-time arts and culture event. We'll be building a glowing light structure, using straws, LEDs, and the fun of geometry to create something huge and beautiful.

Join us in Hockley Square from 6pm onwards to make your own Light Straw and help us! Find out more about Light Night now.

Intro to Arduino Workshop

Our very popular Introduction to Arduino workshops are back! On Saturday, 6th February, Ian, James, and John will take you through using the Arduino microcontroller - from the basics on. Arduinos will be available to buy on the day as well.

Tickets are £16 and available on EventBrite now!

Pick up soldering!

Learn how to solder in this quick and easy workshop on Sunday, 20 March.

Suitable for all ages (but ideal for ages 7 and up) and all skill levels, you'll learn how to solder a battery, magnet, and LEDs onto a circuit board to create your very own flashing robot badge!

Show up at any time between 10am and 1pm on 20 March, and everyone can make their very own badge for just £3 per person!

Make a marble machine!

Build your own marble machine on Friday, 25 March, for only £15!

These marble machines are fun to watch, easy to make, and suitable for all skill levels, abilities, and ages (although children under 13 will need to be supervised).

Stop in at any time between 10am and 2pm to make your machine and buy your tickets now to reserve your machine.

Learn to use Inkscape

We'll be having a beginners' "draw-along" workshop on Inkscape, the popular free vector design tool, on Thursday, 10 March, from 7pm until 9pm.

We'll cover the basic functions as well as some advanced techniques, including drawing lines and shapes, converting to paths, Bézier curves, cutting and joining paths, bitmap tracing, and exporting into the DXF format for use with the laser cutter.

Tickets are only £5 and you'll be creating an example design that works with the laser cutter.

Thursday, 25 February, 7pm onwards

We'll be sharing experiences, ideas, and peer learning around the Internet of Things. From hardware platforms, cloud services, software, and devices, we'll be talking about connecting devices and software to each other, whether you've already build Skynet or are just getting started!

Stitch and Bitch

Tuesday, 15 February, 6pm onwards

Do you knit? Crochet? Weave? Spin? Nålebinding? Embroidery? Kumihimo? Anything to do with stitching? Every third Tuesday, from approximately 6pm onwards, we’ll be in the comfy area getting our stitch on.

Retro Computing Group

Thursday, 17 February, 7:30pm - 10pm

The Retro Computing group meet on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30PM and fire up old computers from a bygone era. Our aims are simply to fire up old machines and natter about them. Discuss new projects and fix as necessary. January's meeting saw an impromptu swap-meet, a ZX-81 fired up for the first time in who knows how long, and an Amiga 1200 running as if it were yesterday.

Skatenights at the Space

Tuesday, 2 February and 23 February, 6pm onwards

Skatenights run on the first and fourth Tuesdays of every month, where we watch skate videos and films, do some board maintenance, and thoroughly utilise the Hackspace for skating fun. Our first was in January, where 12 members and non-members turned up to watch skate videos and shoot the breeze in the comfy area.

The fun starts at 6pm, and if you're not a member, you're welcome to get a tour of the space as well. Find out more on the Facebook Event page or join up with Nottingham Longboarding to find out about future events!

Save the date!

On Thursday, 24 March, we'll be having our big Hackspace Fundraising party at Antenna. More details to follow, but we'll be having a silent auction, where things you make will go on sale to help the space.

So start making things now to sell at the fundraiser!
