If you've been in on a Sunday morning, you might have noticed that it's been...slightly quieter. The church downstairs has moved out, and a new gym equipment manufacturer has moved into part of the space downstairs.
This provides us with a great opportunity, as the rest of the space is available for us to rent - and we want to take advantage of this. Not only will it give us more space, it'll provide a better space for metalworking (including possibly getting a kiln), a nicer workshop/meeting room, bigger woodworking space, and, most importantly, will make us the biggest hackspace in the UK (take that, London!).
But this will be a financial stretch for us, and we need your support. We're currently running a pledge drive to build up our finances to allow us to rent the space and make the necessary improvements we'll need, such as a staircase with a chairlift, taking down walls, and generally making the area even more awesome.
You can find all the details on the Wiki. We encourage all members to look at the information and get as excited about this as many of our members currently are.
This workshop is very popular, so please get your tickets before it's too late!
Quiet times in the space!
Rollo Academy, the dance studio on the floor above us, will be having exams on the following dates:
Sunday, 8th November
Sunday, 13th December
During these days, we respectfully ask that all members refrain from making loud noises during the day, as this can interrupt the students' exams upstairs.
Did you know?
Did you know it costs around £5 an hour to run the Hackspace? That's paying the rent, the electricity bill, buying toilet paper, and all the other necessary expenses.
Think about it the next time you're in the space! (And turn the lights off, okay?)
Badges, badges, badges!
We had a fantastic time at Derby Mini Maker Faire! Right by the main entrance, we terrified small children with Kate's Halloween corner, amazed families with Toby's canjos and banjos, and made more badges than we thought was humanly possible!
Between the Green Festival and Derby Mini Maker Faire, we've made over £100 selling badges (and built up some powerful biceps in the process!). But we could use your help!
Do you have old magazines that have neat illustrations or designs in them? Are they really old and really nerdy? Do you mind them being cut into a huge pile of circles to become badges? Then we'd love to have them! We'll go through them, cut out the best bits, and recycle them for you.
Just leave them on the Donations Shelf in the library (the bookshelves in the comfy area), and Kate, our resident librarian and furious organiser, will go through them.
Please keep in mind that space is limited, so don't bring an entire decade's worth of magazines all at once - a few issues at a time would work perfectly.
Make the space better!
Are you busy tonight? Want to do something that will make the space a better place?
The space is starting up Tidy Up Tuesdays! We'll be helping clean up the space - putting tools back, tidying up areas, taking out the rubbish - the kind of thing everyone forgets about but is so important to making the space awesome.
So come on down between 7 and 9pm and make the space look amazing! And if you can't make it tonight, come down next week, where there'll be free pizza for volunteers!
CNC Milling Machine Pledge Drive!
We have the opportunity to buy a nice lightly-used CNC milling machine. You might have noticed we have one in the space, but with the software running only on a Pentium 4 (complete with floppy disk and Zip drives), it's rather difficult to use. We can get a bigger and easier to use machine for only £2,000 - definitely cheaper than it would be new.
The pledge drive is currently at £690 and if you would like to see this machine in the space (possibly in the new CNC area we can build downstairs!), then join the pledge!
Comics Making Group
Thursday, 5 November, 7pm - 9pm
Do you like to doodle? Make up stories? Read comics? Nottingham Hackspace Comics Making group is monthly session for comics chat and creation! You don't have to be great at drawing or writing to come along, just love comics!
Stitch and Bitch
Tuesday, 17 November, 6pm onwards
Do you knit? Crochet? Weave? Spin? Nålebinding? Embroidery? Kumihimo? Anything to do with stitching? Every third Tuesday, from approximately 6pm onwards, we’ll be in the comfy area getting our stitch on.
Retro Computing Group
Thursday, 19 November, 7:30pm - 10pm
The Retro Computing group meet on the third Thursday of the month and fire up old computers from a bygone era. From the time of Manic Miner, Elite, Granny's Garden and many more.
Meetings are usually very informal with no agenda but for November we are going to get out the "portables" and compute like a bunch of YUPPIES. The plan isn't set in stone but we will meet at the hackspace around 7:30PM on Thursday November 19th and than perhaps go to the pub and compute there for a bit.
The December meeting (17th December) will be a games night. So if you can only come to two meetings a year, these are the two.
Remember these important dates at your local hackspace!
Tidy Tuesdays Every Tuesday, 7pm-9pm
Wednesday, 4th November, 8pm-9pm
Hack the Space Day
