Nottingham Hackspace

Hi everyone!

We hope you're having a lovely summer in this fantastic weather (even though by the time you read this, it'll probably be raining!). We've got a lot going on this month, including Electromagnetic Field, some new groups and events and a special Instructables LED build event!

EMF Camp, 29th - 31st August

EMFImagine a camping festival with a power grid and high-speed internet access; a temporary village of geeks, crafters, and technology enthusiasts that's lit up by night, and buzzing with activity during the day. That’s Electromagnetic Field, and we’ll be there!

We’ll be setting up our own Nottingham Hackspace Village onsite, with projects, workshops and demonstrations, including Toby’s terrifying drinks fogger and BarBot. Tickets are still available for this unique event, it would be fantastic to see you there!

You can find out more about what we'll be doing on several threads in the Nottinghack Google Group and on the Wiki.

Nottingham Hackspace at Pecha Kucha

Have you heard of Pecha Kucha? It's a 20x20 talk - 20 images, 20 seconds per image, loose and fast talking about any subject.

The Nottingham Creative Quarter runs Pecha Kucha Nottingham events every month around Nottingham's Creative Quarter, giving local businesses and creative enterprises a chance to network and see what amazing ideas are coming out of the area.

On Friday, 15 August, the Pecha Kucha will be held at Nottingham Contemporary, and Hackspace member Dominic Morrow will be talking about the Hackspace. The event runs from 4pm until 6pm, and is free to attend.

And Nottingham Hackspace will be hosting the next Pecha Kucha event on Friday, 19 September. We'll have more details about that in the next newsletter.

So if you want to see some amazing things being presented, check out Pecha Kucha!

BarBot Fundraiser!

Come along to this special evening on Saturday, August 16, to see the mighty BarBot in action! There will be a host of fantastic BarBot related activities for you to enjoy, including:

  • Robot-made cocktails!
  • Help design some bling / art to make BarBot look even prettier!
  • A competition to name BarBot (BarBot is just a working title)!
  • Help us test BarBot and the software which runs it!
  • Robot made soft drinks!
  • Hilarious malfunctions!
  • Minimal risk of electric shock!
  • A significant risk of drink spillage!
  • Talk to the amazing makers who built BarBot!
  • Tiny umbrellas!

This event is a fundraiser to help reimburse the BarBot team who have spent a lot of their own money to complete BarBot, and to stock up on ingredients for EMF.

So if you want to see BarBot in action, come along on Saturday, 16 August, from 6pm until 9pm!

All the LEDs!

The lovely folk at Instructables have sent us a whole bunch of large LEDs in a range of colours, to make fantastic light-based projects for their next Instructables Build Night.

Join us on the 17th August from 11am to 5pm for a drop in day dedicated to working on your own project, contributing to a group project, or hacking an existing project to make it brighter and better with LEDs!

We'll be documenting some of the projects people create to post on the Instructables site!

Creator Fair at The National Space Centre

The National Space Centre in Leicester will be having their first ever Creator Fair, and Nottingham Hackspace is going to be there!

We’ll be running workshops, checking out all the awesome things, and showing off finished projects, prototypes and work in progress at our table.

If you’re interested in helping out as a volunteer, or adding your work to our stall, let us know on the Google Group thread.

Maker Faires Everywhere!

Derby will be having their third annual Mini Maker Faire on Saturday, 25 October.

You can sign up as a maker now. Nottingham Hackspace will have a table, but we really encourage all makers to sign up for their own tables to show off their amazing projects!

The Elephant & Castle Mini Maker Faire has also announced their 2014 Mini Maker Faire - taking place on Saturday, 15 November. And you can sign up as a maker there as well, if you fancy a trip down to London.
