Princeton University Hindu Life Program

Dear Friends,
Imagine getting an email from us with the following opening line:

This year's Diwali at the Chapel celebration is being canceled due to lack of funds.

Thankfully, I am NOT sending such a message to you now, and I hope that I never have to. But the reality is that the expense involved in hosting our largest yearly celebration of Hindu culture and devotion at Princeton University, now in its 10th year, exceeds the modest budget available to us through the university. Since we began in 2008, the event has grown in both size and significance, and we pray it continues to grow. To put it bluntly: we CANNOT continue to host Diwali at the Chapel without community funding.

This message is an invitation to attend our 10th annual DIWALI AT THE CHAPEL event, but it is also an appeal to support the event.  We appreciate your donations at the event itself, but we also require a few inspired community members to step forward and sponsor key areas of the celebration.

Diwali at the Chapel has already made Princeton history. We look forward to the Hindu Life Program sending out emails about the 15th, 20th, 25th, and eventually the 50th and 100th annual celebrations of this event. Please help us achieve that.  More information about this year's special event and how to support it is below.

Yours in Seva,

Inaugurated in 2008, Diwali at the Chapel is the university’s largest and grandest celebration of Diwali on campus. The event features offerings of devotional music and dance, traditional worship (aarti), and spiritual reflections.

The event is absolutely free to attend, requires no ticketing, and is open to one and all. In past years, we have hosted close to one thousand people for this Diwali celebration in a single night.

We are committed to keeping Diwali at the Chapel a free event, but we need your help and sponsorship to make that happen. Here is a general overview of the annual budget for this event:

  • Guest Presenters – $4000
  • Decor – $2000
  • Staging – $2000
  • Lights and Sound – $1500
  • Advertising – $3000
  • Building Services – $1000
  • Supplies – $1200
  • Prasadam - SPONSORED (Thank you!)
  • Misc. Fees and Expenses – $500

Please consider sponsoring one or more of these areas, or—if you are unable to do that—contributing toward some portion of them. Contact us today. Checks should be made payable to Princeton University, with Hindu Life Program Diwali in the memo line. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. We cannot host this amazing celebration without you!

Diwali at the Chapel is hosted by the Office of Religious Life Hindu Life Program and the Princeton Hindu Satsangam student group. It remains the Hindu Life Program’s flagship event and annual celebration of Hindu culture, tradition, and spirituality.
