Updates from ICLEI's Global Sustainability Network
Edition #34 April 2016

Mauricio Rodas
Mayor, Quito, Ecuador

Dear ICLEI Friends and Colleagues,

On 17-20 October 2016, Quito, Ecuador will welcome delegates to Habitat III, the third United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.

Habitat III presents a major opportunity for governments to build on the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement at COP21 in 2015. We, cities and regions, expect the national governments to define a New Urban Agenda that describes a global approach to sustainable development in cities. We call on our national governments to use this opportunity to integrate all facets of sustainable development and to promote equity, welfare and shared prosperity, with a specific focus on cities, which is where these changes will be implemented.

In particular, the New Urban Agenda should set a path for cities to realize Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, resilient, safe and sustainable”. As a part of this, the New Urban Agenda will also encourage all local leaders to take inspiration from pioneering cities, where transformational change has long been underway.

The New Urban Agenda should also outline national urban policy frameworks as a crucial path to implementation. It is vital that multi-level, multi-stakeholder partnerships emerge from Habitat III, offering strong supporting mechanisms for cities to implement sustainability initiatives aligned with the global agreements of 2015.

Habitat III is a key moment in the transition to a sustainable urban world, as the New Urban Agenda will shape our progress for the decades to come. I look forward to welcoming you as part of the ICLEI delegation to Quito for this event.

With kind regards,

Mauricio Rodas
Mayor of Quito, Ecuador
