Updates from ICLEI's Global Sustainability Network
Edition #27 July 2015

Mpho Parks Tau
Executive Mayor, Johannesburg

Dear ICLEI Friends and Colleagues,

Have you ever walked through your city and wondered what it would look like without cars?

Here in Johannesburg, we have decided to take a radical approach to sustainable urban mobility. As well as developing numerous public transport and cycling projects, we are also hosting, in October 2015, Africa’s first EcoMobility World Festival!

The EcoMobility World Festival is a month-long presentation of an innovative and forward-thinking urban transportation culture. This involves debate, discussion, workshops and presentations, bringing together experts on sustainability from around the world. Most excitingly, it involves the removal of cars from one district for the entire month of the Festival.

We decided to make this as visible as possible. So for October, our Sandton Central Business District – which normally welcomes more than 85,000 vehicles every day – will ideally go car-free. For one month, residents of and visitors to Sandton will get around on foot, by bike, and with a wide range of other mobility options that will be provided during the event.

Activities related to EcoMobility will generate other benefits, such as promoting walking for healthy lifestyles and reducing emissions within Sandton. The city is excited to show the world that climate change can be combatted with proper decision-making and with people to the fore. The EcoMobility World Festival 2015 will allow us to experiment with the different mobility options that decrease car use and benefit people, showing us a cleaner, less stressful, and more joyful urban future.

You are invited to visit us during October and experience this remarkable transition! I look forward to welcoming you to our city.

With kind regards,

Mpho Parks Tau
Executive Mayor, Johannesburg, and ICLEI RexCom Member
