“A Question Of Mindset And Smart Thinking” For Low-Carbon Cities

Siemens AG and Danfoss hosted a session at the Cities & Regions Pavilion at COP21 on Tuesday, 8 December. Entitled “Accelerating Low-Carbon Development in Emerging Cities through City-Business Cooperation,” the session convened global business leaders and mayors to discuss low-carbon investments and the potential for city-business collaboration in emerging middleweight cities.

Building Capacity To Deliver Local Climate Finance

Hosted by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), this session at the Cities & Regions Pavilion on Monday, 7 December allowed a high-level international panel to discuss their experiences and to assess what has worked in terms of delivering climate finance at the local level, and what needs to be improved to further enable local climate action.

Cities And Regions Moving Towards 100% Renewable Energy

The cities of Paris, Vancouver, Tshwane, Malmö and Jeju Province took the stage on Monday, 7 December at the Cities & Regions Pavilion to share with the audience strategies for a transition towards renewables. The political leaders in this open session also pointed to some common ingredients for success in triggering a commitment towards 100% renewable energy.

Cities And Subnationals Advance Agenda At COP21 Focus Event

The Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA) focus event on Cities and Subnationals on 8 December at COP21 touched on all aspects of local climate action, offering the perspective of experts, UN agencies and local leaders. Mayors and representatives of a range of organizations joined Al Gore and Arnold Schwarznegger in addressing the summit.

City Mayors Respond To Urban Poor Through Climate Action

On 8 December 2015, Mayor James Nxumalo of Durban, South Africa joined Councillor Wayne Walker of Auckland, New Zealand; Amal-Lee Amin, Division Chief of Infrastructure and Environmental Sector at the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB); and Cristiana Fragola, Regional Director for Europe and Middle East at 100 Resilient Cities for a panel discussion focusing on the positive impacts of climate action on the urban poor. The session was convened as part of the Momentum for Change Initiative led by the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat.

LGMA High Level Intervention

On 8 December, Ulrich Sumptoh, Lord Mayor, Port Vila, Vanuatu delivered an intervention for Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency at the COP21 High Level Segment. Through the intervention, Lord Mayor Sumptoh urged Parties to agree on an inclusive, ambitious and fair outcome that includes effective engagement of all levels of governments and non-state actors, a commitment to global climate neutrality or 100% renewable energy by 2050, a vision for adaptation and a framework for loss-and-damage and mobilization of technical and financial resources.
