Updates from ICLEI's Global Sustainability Network
December 2016
Dear ICLEI friends and colleagues,

2016 is concluding with a clear message: sustainability is an irreplaceable building block for the foundation of global development. Now it is time to deliver on this promise and make the trajectory irreversible.

Over the past two years, nations have adopted a series of key global frameworks, from the Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement to the recent New Urban Agenda.

Local and subnational governments committed to sustainability have had a strong and clear voice in raising the bar higher in all these frameworks and are vital in their successful implementation. They have shown strong, transformational leadership on sustainability by accelerating ambitious climate action, divesting from fossil fuel, committing to 100 percent renewable energy, advancing sustainable public procurement, expanding ecomobility, enhancing resilience and well-being and working towards carbon neutrality. They did so while strengthening their collaboration with other ambitious stakeholders.

The next two years will be critical in building a strong architecture to implement all global commitments on sustainability. This architecture should include innovative and ambitious systems for finance, capacity building and multilevel governance. Local and subnational governments should use these innovations to quickly advance and scale up their sustainability actions, as their contributions to the national and global level.

We at ICLEI are committed to accelerate these efforts with the commitments, experience and partnerships of our network in 2017 and beyond.

With kind regards,
Gino Van Begin
Secretary General of ICLEI
