Events at the Cities & Regions Pavilion: 4 December
Jeffrey D. Sachs Speaks at TAP Talks in Cities & Regions Pavilion
Jeffrey Sachs was joined on stage by Stockholm Mayor Karin Wanngård and Rosario Mayor Mónica Fein for a special TAP Talk today. Sachs spoke of the need for "Deep Decarbonisation" and praised Stockholm for leading the way with its commitment to become fossil fuel-free by 2040.

carbonn Climate Registry 5 Year Overview Report Released
This report synthesizes reporting trends of over 608 cities, towns and regions in 62 countries around the world, showing that local and subnational governments are ambitious and transparent – just the reported efforts of local and regional governments already exceed, in impact, that of most national governments.

Non-state Actors: A Chance for Climate
On 2 December, Nantes Métropole launched the Climate Actors World Summit at the Cities & Regions Pavilion. The session was attended by both Ségolene Royal, Minister of Ecology for France, and Hakima El Haite, representing the Moroccan Presidency of COP22.

This summit, which will take place on 26-28 September 2016 in Nantes, will bring together local authorities, businesses, associations, trade unions, the scientific community and civic society for extended discussions around the challenges and opportunities of climate change.

Mayors Speak at Launch of Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction
On 3 December as part of the LPAA Buildings Day in the UNFCCC Blue Zone, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction was launched. ICLEI is a part of this alliance, and mobilized Mayors and representatives of cities to speak at the launch: Sydney, Bogor, Belo Horizonte, Atlanta, Cape Town, Warsaw, Tokyo. Following this launch, ICLEI hosted a session on district energy in the Cities & Regions Pavilion.

Climate Summit for Local Leaders, Paris City Hall

On 4 December, the Climate Summit for Local Leaders, co-hosted by Anne Hidalgo and Michael R. Bloomberg, will take place. This landmark gathering of city leaders constitutes a major step in tackling climate change. At the Summit, ICLEI and UCCRN will host a joint press conference to publicize the Second Assessment Report for Cities and Climate Change and the Transformative Actions Program (TAP). ICLEI President and Mayor of Seoul, Park Wonsoon, ICLEI First Vice President and Mayor of Durban James Nxumalo and ICLEI Vice President and Mayor of Mexico City Miguel Mancera will speak. Closing remarks will be delivered by Jeffrey Sachs.


"We Have the Proven Technologies”: Tackling Short-Lived Climate Pollutants

The overriding message from a session hosted by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) on 3 December was that short-lived climate pollutants, which represent a significant threat to public health and contribute to climate change, can be tackled with technologies and mechanisms that already exist. A range of partners and organizations shared how they are contributing to cleaner air in cities.

At a special session hosted by the City of Gothenburg, representatives of cities and financial institutions shared their views on green bonds - an innovative way of financing sustainable development. Gothenburg has taken the lead on green bonds, and panelists were optimistic about the possibilities offered by this financial mechanism.

Transformative Change in Transport Systems

The Vice Mayor for Environment and Transport in Oslo, Lan Marie Nguyen Berg joined with representatives of Milan (Italy), Johannesburg (South Africa) and San Francisco (USA) discussed the shift toward sustainable urban transport systems, which has the potential to unlock USD 11 trillion in economic opportunities by 2050 on energy savings alone.
