Updates from the ICLEI Global Sustainability Network
Edition #36 June 2016

Maimunah Mohd Sharif
President of the Municipal Council of Seberang Perai, Malaysia

Dear ICLEI friends and colleagues,

Last month, I had the honour to represent ICLEI as part of the Global Task Force delegation at the Habitat III Local Authorities Hearings held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

The event was an opportunity to demonstrate global collaboration among local and regional governments in providing input into national government negotiations for the New Urban Agenda.

I strongly believe that the New Urban Agenda must ensure integration at all levels, translate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into action - starting with SDG 11 on sustainable cities - as well as enhance capacity building and continuous training for local government, secure finance for implementation by local governments and foster the empowerment, collaboration and engagement with communities and mayors.

In Seberang Parai, we believe the “city is for the people and people are for the city”, and for this we integrate 4Rs (Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), 4Ps (Public, Private and People Partnership) and GRPB (Gender Responsive and Participatory Budgeting).

My dialogue with UN officials and with my peers all around the world proved to me that Habitat III would make a real difference if it can mobilize subnational, national, regional and global actors and resources to globalize ambitious sustainability actions in every community and jurisdiction.

I sincerely hope to see these ideas to be embedded in the outcomes of upcoming negotiations, and I am committed to engaging with ICLEI Network and leadership to contribute to their implementation beyond Quito.

With kind regards,

Maimunah Mohd Sharif
Municipal President, Municipal Council of Seberang Perai (Malaysia), member of the ICLEI Global Executive Committee and President of Malaysian Association of Local Authorities (MALA)
