Updates from ICLEI's Global Sustainability Network
Edition #38 August 2016
Dear ICLEI Friends and Colleagues,

As my second and final term as Mayor of Belo Horizonte (Brazil) comes to an end in December 2016, I am grateful for this opportunity to say farewell for now to my ICLEI family and reflect back on the great accomplishments and achievements I had the opportunity to be part of in the network.
Our road to sustainability has been a priority to me and we were fortunate to count on key partnerships over the years. From sustainable construction to local renewables and low emission development strategies, we have been continuously active in ICLEI projects and programs.
I was honored to host the first ever ICLEI World Congress in Latin America in 2012, as local governments prepared to a new global chapter of the sustainable development agenda to be discussed at Rio+20. Hosting the ICLEI community in Belo and delivering our message to UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in Rio, engendered a legacy in our internationalization strategy, opening new dialogues and partnerships for our city.
Since 2015, I have been able to contribute to our advocacy work also as President of the National Front of Mayors of Brazil (FNP). In this new role, I have paid attention to our need to mobilize mayors in the country to scale up action and promote integration of policies between different levels of government. We have responded to the unequivocal call from Pope Francis, mobilized close to 40 commitments from Brazilian Mayors to the Compact of Mayors and opened new dialogues with the National Government on our way to and post COP21.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to play a part in this history we’ve built together as a community and I’m very proud of all we have achieved in these past years. Since Brazilian Mayors can run for reelection only once, and a new local leader is to be elected in the following months and serve as Mayor on January 1st. But I’m confident that Belo Horizonte cannot go back on our local efforts to build a sustainable city and that this family will remain a crucial actor for the challenges of implementation ahead at the national, regional and global arenas.
Since I’ll stand as President of FNP until April 2017, I’d like to inform you all that FNP will host the fourth edition of the Meeting of Municipalities with Sustainable Development on April 24th to 28th, aiming to gather 10,000 mayors, local, regional, national and international government representatives, experts and partners to discuss sustainable development and pave the way to the incoming generation of Mayors in Brazil (
I wish my fellow ICLEI Member mayors all the best in this path ahead and hope we continue to be connected.
With kind regards,
Marcio Lacerda
Mayor of Belo Horizonte, Brazil
President of National Front of Mayors (FNP)
