Thank You!

Thanks to the collective effort of all of our members, partners, allies and supporters, 2016 has been another successful year for the Coalition for Nonprofit Housing & Economic Development (CNHED). Those achievements would not be possible without your contributions – you are the core of CNHED.

In the coming year, CNHED will be examining how we can further refine our practitioner engagement, develop new strategies to build capacity, and most importantly, foster just and equitable community development solutions so that all District residents can be part of thriving, livable communities that are socially, racially, and economically just!

See a few highlights from 2016 below and congratulations to all of you!

Budget Advocacy wins again! We galvanized support for the Council to pass most of our budget asks, including: $100 million for the Housing Production Trust Fund; $16 million for the Home Purchase Assistance Program; $3 million for the Small Business Technical Assistance Program; $8.4 million for the Great Streets Initiative; $544k in the new TOPA Application-Assistance Pilot Program; and while we didn’t get everything we wanted, we did get some increased funding for the Homeward DC plan to end chronic homelessness.
Our working groups, committees, and dedicated projects tackled legislative proposals, policy changes and program improvements in housing, economic development, workforce development, sustainable energy and small business development  -  our most comprehensive impact to date. As a member of the rent control coalition, CNHED worked to improve rent control policies in the District and Council passed two bills this fall making great strides in doing just that. We also released a new policy brief, providing analysis and recommendations on Ending Homelessness through the Continuum of Housing.

The Housing For All Rally, co-sponsored this year with The Way Home Campaign, was the largest ever. There were over 1,000 participants, including the Mayor, four DC Councilmembers, several agency directors and many luminaries.

The Housing For All Campaign won the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s 2016 Organizing Leader Award

CNHED also held the first ever Small Business Takeover, drawing attention to small businesses and the organizations that support them; #DCSmallBizTakeover trended #1 in DC for the day.

DC Preservation Network released a new interactive, map-based website version of the DC Preservation Catalog that will help the District and its residents identify and track assisted housing that may need intervention to preserve affordability.

CNHED held the first annual Community Development Week which drew much needed attention to the work being done by CNHED member organizations!

CNHED's Annual Celebration of the Community Development sector in the District was a smash!
CNHED has launched four major initiatives this year:
  1. Anchor Institution Initiative - whose first phase is intended to help African-American owned businesses in the District gain contracts from area universities and hospitals to further support equitable economic development.
  2. Civic Tech & Data Collaborative Project - in concert with our partners NeighborhoodInfo DC, DHCD and Code for DC, won one of four national awards from Living Cities to develop an online decision-support tool to help better plan for affordable housing preservation interventions.
  3. Landlord Partnership Initiative - in a partnership with the DC Downtown Business Improvement District and the DC Department of Human Services (DHS), we’ve created an LLC to manage a fund which will provide incentives to landlords to lease up residents and families below current credit requirements and those coming through DHS’s Homeless Services program.
  4. Asset Development Policy Project - in concert with Capital Area Asset Builders, to develop a policy initiative focused on eliminating barriers to individual and family asset accumulation.
Thanks for your participation and support!
