Hey Team!

So we're already into the second week of October and don't you love that change of's definitely shorts weather now!

Here at NZ Kayaker I can see the change of seasons simply by how often my phone is going off. It seems like everyone wants to go fishing now and with the water warming up I'm hoping for another cracker season.

NZ Kayaker Blog

Last weekend I went for an exploratory mission up to Whiritoa. Keeping a total of 6 snapper up to 5.2kg, it was a fruitful trip.

The major bonus of this place is that it's protected from the westerly winds, which will be dominant for the next 2 months.

Get out there and enjoy it!

Sunday Sessions

This is a free kayak fishing trip that I offer to all. It's not a guided  trip and it's not a's just my way of getting a group of mates to go for a fish.

Date: Sunday 11th October
Location: launching at the northern end of Waihi Beach

Time: 6.30am until whenever
Target: anything that swims
Level: suitable for kayakers of all ability levels
Equipment: normal fishing kit including drogue and anchor.
Tackle: I'll be using softbaits and pilchards on a strayline.
Extra's: bring a VHF and use channel 6 if you own one.
Rentals: my kayaks are available for just $50 if you need to hire one.
Cancelations: will be announced on the NZ Kayaker Facebook page if necessary.

Note: this is my day to go fishing so it's considered unguided. I'll happily offer help and advice but each kayaker assumes full responsibility for themselves.

Labour Weekend Getaway

I've had a lot of interest in this weekend so here's the guts of it....
  • Location will be Maraehakao Bay, East Cape.
  • Accommodation is camping at the Maraehakao camp ground - no bookings are necessary but bring some cash to pay ($15 per night I think).
  • Dates - I'm going to drive down on the afternoon of Friday the 24th, return on Monday.
  • A big BBQ team dinner on Saturday
  • Normal camping and fishing gear required.
  • Unofficial competition for the weekend - I'll put on a prize for the biggest Snapper and Kingfish
  • Rules - no drama, come and go as you please, have fun.

Note: if you were wanting to go to the Coromandel I'll be going there for the Coro Gold Rush comp in November. I'll be taking it easy so I'm happy to fish with anyone in this comp.

Final Word

For the next few months the Spring equinox is going to start barrelling in and with it comes the westerly wind. This will make for challenging conditions. In light of last weekends accident down on Lake Tekapo, please take it easy. Just remember that there's always another day to go fishing...there's just not another one of you!
