Synthesis Studio Students Showcase Skills at Montgomgery Housing Authority | This Synthesis Studio project is an outcome of the MCP program’s partnership with the Montgomery Housing Authority (MHA) on their Choice Neighborhood Initiative (CHI) grant. MHA received this $450K grant from HUD for planning the redevelopment of its affordable housing projects in Montgomery. MCP faculty Dr. Mittal has been collaborating with the MHA since the inception of the grant application over a year ago and developed the studio projects with the MHA staff. 23 students in 4 groups worked for developing a 2040 housing development plan for the city of Montgomery with each group working on a specific project. Among 4 groups, 3 groups studied sites with existing residents and 1 group studied a vacant lot. This studio consisted of detailed analysis of housing, allocation of funding, and relocation of residents with the promise of new development. The final presentation was held at MHA with the staff and the County Mayor present. New ideas were highly appreciated and will be considered to address some of the key challenges faced by the residents within the City of Montgomery. Thank you to the Montgomery Housing Authority and Prof. Mittal for coordinating this project, and a HUGE thank you to the students for such a productive semester! |

 | GIS Students Apply Their Skills to our Great StateThe final project for Dr. Mahato’s GIS in planning and policy provided students the opportunity to synthesize and test their GIS skills that they learned during this course. Groups of two students each formulated their own project, identified issues and problems, opportunities, developed objectives and solutions. Using GIS, they defined the scope of the project, collected data, analyzed, and implemented their project through online ArcGIS platforms. Check out a couple of examples of student works below! |

Student Testimonialsfirsthand descriptions of what makes Auburn’s MCP program so great | “ I completed my internship from February to July of this year at the Lee-Russell Council of Governments. One of my first tasks was to assist with the planning and writing of a Community Development Block Grant COVID-19 Grant Program (CDBG-CV) grant for both Lee and Russell County. I also assisted with the completion of a Comprehensive Economic Development Study (CEDS) for the Lee-Russell region. Both projects showed me the importance and difficulty of planning at a regional level. In planning both projects, we had to communicate with multiple stakeholders and get them to agree on mutually beneficial goals. I was lucky enough to start working full time for Lee-Russell. I am currently administering Russell County's CDBG-CV grant, and our Board of Directors adopted the CEDS in early November. I am also assisting the Auburn-Opelika Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) with day-to-day activities. We are also working with the National Park Service to create a master plan to create a bike trail from Opelika to Roanoke. So far, my experience has showed me the importance of being flexible, as I must work on many unrelated projects simultaneously. I've also seen the importance of communication and collaboration between stakeholders, and how planners must incorporate feedback from both the community as well as local officials into plans. I look forward to continuing my journey through the MCP program, and then applying what I learn in the classroom to my career. . ” -Ben McGarr |

“ This past fall semester I was lucky enough to be a GRA for the Community Planning Program at Auburn. So far, it’s been an amazing experience and has given me tons of opportunities to learn about how planning works in the real world. I got to work with Dr. Megan Heim LaFrombois on her research in the planning field, specifically in the field of planning pedagogy. This research allowed me to expand my horizons a bit and learn a new topic in something I am already very passionate about. Along with assisting with research, I, along with the other Graduate Assistants, helped promote the Community Planning program by working a table on the Haley concourse and distributing posters around campus. I got to talk to several interested undergraduate students, some prospective planning students, and even some non-students interested in a career change. Overall, this fall semester as a GRA was fulfilling and I can’t wait for next semester! ” Patrick Patterson- |
