(please note that snow days might occur and we will have to reschedule)
Instructor: Rachel Heberling

Ready to move from black-and-white to color intaglio? Want the complexity of printing two plates at once? This 5-week course will build upon what has already been learned with step and triple aquatint, as well as building from basic to advanced registration techniques. The black image plate will consist of either line-work and/or tone, and the color plate will be large flat areas of color, created by aquatint.

Students are asked to bring their own etching needles/scribers, and to acquire zinc plates (11x17 max size and you may bring a plate that’s already been started) and paper (Hahnemuhle Copperplate is recommended). All are available for purchase at Tiger Lily. Grounds, inks, tarletan and basic studio supplies will be provided. Scrapers and burnishers are available for use in class or to sign out for short periods of time. If you are starting a new plate, you MUST have your image outline in soft pencil ready, no later than the second class.

Intro to Intaglio Class (using the saline sulfate etch)
Thursdays, March 28 and April 4, 11 and 18           5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Instructor: Rachel Heberling

There’s nothing quite like the delicate line of intaglio pressed into fine paper. In this class, we will start with preparing a zinc plate and transferring a drawing, then etching linework into the metal. During these four sessions, we will proof and rework our plates as well as begin to add tone with the technique of aquatint and learn the basics of editioning prints. The quickest and safest method of saline sulfate etch (copper sulfate and sodium chloride) will be used on 6” x 8” plates. Simply bring an outline drawing of that size to class and we will get started! No experience is necessary and all skill levels are welcome. All materials will be provided and are included in the fee. The basic supplies are yours to keep, but if you wish to purchase your own set of specialized tools to use at home, simply contact us and we will provide you with the details.

Screen printing is one of the most versatile of the printmaking methods, enabling you to print a variety of different types of images onto nearly anything. This three-week introductory class is open to all skill levels and no experience is necessary. In this class we will be working with one-color prints, covering all of the basics from start to finish on how to prepare, process, and print your own silkscreen design. I will be showing non-digital methods of creating images and will discuss how to prepare digital images for processing. All materials will be provided with the exception of paper - or whatever material you would like to print on!
