Susan Wefald to Speak of “Important Voices” at ND Heritage Center & State Museum

BISMARCK - The public is invited to a free program, “Important Voices,” on Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, Bismarck, presented by author Susan Wefald.

Only 17 women have been elected to statewide office in North Dakota in the past 125 years. Susan Wefald will present the stories of these women, their triumphs and losses, their hopes and challenges. Based on Wefald’s book “Important Voices, North Dakota’s Women Elected State Officials Share Their Stories – 1893-2013,” the presentation will share what these North Dakota women accomplished and the challenges still facing women running for statewide office today. Wefald will be available for book signing following the presentation, with books available for purchase at the Museum store.

Wefald was the first woman to serve on the North Dakota Public Service Commission.  Appointed to the Commission by Governor Edward Schafer in 1992, she was elected to three more terms and served on the Commission for 16 years.  She is the author of several books including the award winning “Spectacular North Dakota Hikes – Bring the Dog.”

This program is part of the State Historical Society of North Dakota’s Sensational Sundays programs. Sensational Sundays are free programs sponsored by the State Historical Society that include a variety of lectures, concerts, movies, and tours that provide engaging, educational, historic, and cultural information.
