Dakota Exile Healing Ride Events Planned at Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site
Fort Abercrombie, N.D. - Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site will host the “Dakota Exile Healing Ride” programming on Saturday, April 22. Participants in the ride will remember the US-Dakota War of 1862 in Minnesota and at Fort Abercrombie with the goal of starting to heal past hurts. The 1870 Peace Treaty between the Dakota and Ojibwe people that was drawn up at Fort Abercrombie will also be commemorated.
The day’s events will include speakers on the cultural heritage of the Dakota people and the 1870 Peace Treaty. There will be a demonstration of the game of Lacrosse, “The Creator’s Game,” that is rooted in the cultural tradition of the native people of North America. All events are free and open to the public.
The “Dakota Exile Healing Ride” begins at Sioux Valley, Canada, on April 13 and ends May 4 at Bdote, Minnesota.
Fort Abercrombie State Historic Site will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. For more information contact Diane Rogness, 701.328.3508 or drogness@nd.gov. Find a calendar of upcoming State Historical Society events at history.nd.gov/events.
