Grand Opening of the Attic Playroom at the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site

BISMARCK – The public is invited to the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site in Bismarck on June 19 for story time, music, and games as part of an open house to celebrate the grand opening of the newly restored attic. The free event from 1 to 4 p.m. will include face painting, a scavenger hunt, refreshments, and story time at 2 and 3 p.m.

Popular games from the 1930s to the present will be available for use in the Mansion attic which was used as a children’s play area from 1901 to 1960. The playroom has been restored to its 1930s appearance when Governor Langer had it remodeled for his children. The Attic Playroom Grand Opening is an official event commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, http://history.nd.gov/50thNHPA/. The attic is not ADA accessible, all other activities are.

Members of the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors Mansion and the Bismarck Historical Society will be available to discuss membership in their societies and their efforts to preserve North Dakota’s History.

In conjunction with the grand opening, Robert Hanna, interpretive coordinator for the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan, will be leading his popular walking tour of downtown Bismarck, “Capital in Farm Country”. The one hour tour starts at Camp Hancock State Historic Site, 101 E. Main Ave. at 1 p.m., and concludes at the Former Governors’ Mansion. For more information contact the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan at 701.462.8535.

The Former Governors’ Mansion is located at 320 East Avenue B in Bismarck and summer hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, noon – 4 p.m.
