Free Screening of "French-Canadian Heritage in North Dakota" at ND Heritage Center & State Museum
BISMARCK - The public is invited to a free screening of “French-Canadian Heritage in North Dakota” on June 19 at 2 p.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. This fifty-minute documentary explores a unique, but often little-known, ethnic population in North Dakota. A discussion with UND French professor Virgil Benoit will follow the film.
Researched, written, and narrated by Benoit and arranged by video producer Tim Oneal, the documentary traces the history of French Canadians in North Dakota from the 1730s to the present. Major themes include the transition from territory to statehood, the nature of immigration, economic practices that preceded farming, the impact of French language schools, the transition from traditional to contemporary farming, interethnic assimilation, and heritage as a resource for interactive living.
