Free Movies Including "Romeo and Juliet" at ND Heritage Center & State Museum
BISMARCK—The public is invited to attend free films based on Shakespeare’s plays each Tuesday in July at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, 612 E. Boulevard Ave., Bismarck. The film screenings are presented in conjunction with the "First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare" exhibit on view in the James E. Sperry Gallery July 6-31. "Romeo and Juliet” will be shown at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. July 12 in the Russell Reid Auditorium. A discussion after the 7 p.m. screening will be led by Brian Palecek, co-founder of Cinema 100 in Bismarck.
Italian director Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film “Romeo and Juliet,” based on Shakespeare’s play, won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. The film stars Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey as star-crossed teenage lovers from feuding families destined for a tragic end. “Romeo and Juliet” runs 138 minutes and is rated PG.
Other free film screenings include “Macbeth” on July 19 and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on July 26. All films will be shown at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. in the Russell Reid Auditorium. A discussion will follow the 3 p.m. screening of “Macbeth” and the 7 p.m. screening of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream."
These programs are part of the State Historical Society of North Dakota’s "Shaking Up Shakespeare" festival in July, presented in collaboration with Capitol Shakespeare and funded in part by the North Dakota Humanities Council.
