North Dakota State Winners Advance to National History Day Contest in Maryland June 12-16

BISMARCK — Six students from North Dakota will compete in the National History Day Contest in College Park, Maryland, from June 12-16. All students were state-level National History Day winners during a competition held at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck on April 15, 2016.

The six North Dakota students will compete in four categories: Virginia Conn from Erik Ramstad Middle School, Minot, will present “Reinvention: When Dylan Plugged In” in Junior Individual Documentary; Evan Friesz from Grant County High School (Elgin/New Leipzig) will present “Theodore Roosevelt’s Roughriders” in Junior Individual Exhibit; Erian Fox, Shaylin Luger, and Syanne Young Bird from Standing Rock High School will present "Exploration, Exchange & Encounters in the Bakken" as a Senior Group Exhibit; and Erika Red Tomahawk from Standing Rock High School will present “The Eagle Feather: Exploration, Encounters, & Exchange in Native American History" as a Senior Paper. Senior categories are for students in grades nine through twelve; junior categories are for students in grades six through eight. National History Day in North Dakota Coordinator Erik Holland, curator of education at the State Historical Society, is accompanying North Dakota's student competitors.

National History Day’s annual Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest represents the national finals for affiliate level contests held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Central America, China, Korea, and South Asia. Each year, more than 600,000 students create historical research projects. Top entries at the local affiliate level advance to the national contest, where students compete for category awards, scholarships, outstanding affiliate entry awards, and special prizes.
