Annual Ice Cream Social to be Held at Former Governors’ Mansion

Bismarck, ND – Family entertainment, children’s games, refreshments, and self-guided visits through the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site at 320 East Avenue B in Bismarck will be among attractions for visitors at the site’s annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, Aug. 9, with free hot dogs and ice cream cones.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors’ Mansion. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Entertainment will begin at 12 p.m. with music by Harvey Schilling. At 12:30 p.m. Bruce Hagen, chairman of the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors’ Mansion will give remarks and call for presentation of the colors by the United Tribes Color and Honor Guard. After the colors have been presented, invited dignitaries will speak. Following the remarks and dignitaries, the North Dakota National Guard will present on the governors in the military.  At 1:30 p.m., Stanley Wright and Gordy Patten will perform “Music of the North.” At 2:30 p.m., State Historical Society of North Dakota Director Claudia Berg will speak on North Dakota state historic sites. At 3 p.m., Family Folk will perform historic songs and dance. The afternoon will wrap up with the Arthur A. Link Fiddle Festival student musicians.  All times are approximate.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 502 N. Fourth Street. Additional parking will be available at Trinity Lutheran Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church at 601 N. Fourth Street.

Visitors can also enjoy the exhibit in the restored carriage house. The featured exhibit, From Buckets of Oats to Quarts of Oil, represents a time of transition from the age of the horse and buggy to the era of the automobile.
