Free Movies Including "Macbeth" at ND Heritage Center & State Museum

BISMARCK—The public is invited to attend free films based on Shakespeare’s plays each Tuesday in July at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, 612 E. Boulevard Ave., Bismarck. The film screenings are presented in conjunction with the "First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare" exhibit on view in the James E. Sperry Gallery July 6-31. "Macbeth” will be shown at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. on July 19 in the Russell Reid Auditorium. A discussion after the 3 p.m. screening will be led by Verena Theile, associate professor of English at North Dakota State University.

This film version of director Rupert Goold’s highly acclaimed stage production stars Sir Patrick Stewart as Macbeth and Kate Fleetwood as Lady Macbeth. Shot on location in the mysterious underground world of Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire, the film evokes the atmosphere of the Soviet Union under Stalin. Originally staged by Chichester Festival Theatre, the production had successful runs in London’s West End and on Broadway, and both Stewart and Fleetwood received Tony Award nominations. "Macbeth" runs 162 minutes and is unrated but contains graphic imagery, so viewer discretion is advised.

The final film to be screened is “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on July 26. The film will be shown at 10 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. in the Russell Reid Auditorium. A discussion will follow the 7 p.m. screening of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream."

These programs are part of the State Historical Society of North Dakota’s "Shaking Up Shakespeare" festival in July, presented in collaboration with Capitol Shakespeare and funded in part by the North Dakota Humanities Council.
