Annual Ice Cream Social to be Held at Former Governors’ Mansion

Bismarck – Family entertainment, children’s games, refreshments, and tours  through the Former Governors’ Mansion State Historic Site at 320 East Ave. B in Bismarck will be among the attractions for visitors at the site’s annual Ice Cream Social on Aug. 14. Youth portraying children of former governors will offer tours of the Mansion from 1-4 p.m., and free hot dogs and ice cream will be available.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota (SHSND) and the Society for the Preservation of the Former Governors’ Mansion (SPFGM). The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.

Entertainment will begin at 12:30 p.m. with music by Harvey Shilling, followed at 1 p.m. by the national anthem and call to order by Bruce Hagen, SPFGM president. At 1:45 p.m. musicians Stan Wright and Gordy Patten will perform, and at 2:25 p.m. Claudia Berg, SHSND director, will speak. Chuck Suchy will perform at 2:40 p.m., Perry Hornbacher will present “100th Anniversary of the First Substantial Win of the Nonpartisan League” at 3:30 p.m., and a memorial tribute to Bob Dolochek will be at 4:15 p.m.. The afternoon will wrap up with music by Family Folk at 4:25 p.m.. All times are approximate.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 502 N. Fourth St. Additional parking will be available at Trinity Lutheran Church and St. George’s Episcopal Church at 601 N. Fourth St.

The Former Governors’ Mansion is a state historic site managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free. Summer hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, noon-4 p.m. For more information about the Former Governors’ Mansion contact 701.328.9528.
