Free Program for Middle School Students Explores Archaeology Careers

BISMARCK, N.D. – Learn about careers in the study and preservation of prehistoric and historic archaeology. “Museum Underground: Archaeology” is a free session for students in grades six to eight on March 23 at 4 p.m. at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. Students will tour behind the scenes and hear first-hand from specialists about collection storage as well as research in the field and laboratories as they learn how Archaeology staff work to preserve the past for the future. This session is part of a new interactive program that introduces middle school students to careers at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. "Museum Underground" sessions help participants think about their own skills and interests as they learn about careers in museums. Students talk with museum professionals and tour behind-the-scene spaces that are typically not open to the public. The final program in the series will examine the work of curators, how to preserve artifacts, and how to build exhibits on April 20.

Programs are sponsored by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and are led by Stephanie Schick, a gallery guide at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum. She is a graduate of Northern Arizona University who previously worked as an educator at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. Schick, who has a passion for history, science, and education, loves to travel and has also taught at schools in Kenya and Egypt.
