WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?

What we've been doing since the last concert and a look into our intentions moving forward.
 

First of all, about the three-tier structure. We thank you for reading through to here. We are well aware that most of you signed up for our mailing list because of your interest for Gustavo as a concert pianist. The truth is however that since we met back in 1999, the fates of KyG have been inevitably intertwined and every product that comes out of our hands – concert, CD, book, website, image – is usually more or less the result of a two person collaboration.

We now have two websites up. The third, the KyG company website – which will hold a webshop and potentially a photography bank – is underway. You may perhaps understand – given the fact that KyG is personally responsible for all content (text, images, translations etc) and execution (meaning physically inputting stuff on the websites and here), that we considered it too labor-intensive to maintain two or three separate newsletters.

You haven’t heard from us in a while because 
   A) we were resting and refueling and
   B) we were preparing and developing.

We’d been going at it practically non-stop since the end of 2008, when we launched the first version of Gustavo’s website. 2011 and the first half of 2012 were particularly brutal, with a CD production, five concerts including a launch concert and one concert abroad and the officialization of the company. KyG carries all of the organization itself. With Karen also holding down an almost full-time job and Gustavo teaching, it may be clear why it was time for some refueling.

Our main intention remains to get Gustavo and the Latin American music he plays heard by as many people as possible. While we still wait for invitations based on the promotional packages we sent out all over the world yet understand that music programmers face their own challenges, we logically decided to do our own thing and plan to continue to do this.

The challenge in the meantime – as for all artists – is a financial one. Holding a long-term, full-time triple role is untenable so Karen had to step out of employment to focus on company and artistic career. This means that since mid-2012 we’ve been searching for alternative money generating avenues.

Also, we’ve been gathering information to get into a more commercial (not just strictly creative) mindset, since we’re good at creating but can stand some help on selling ourselves. It is this path that has led to the revamping of Gustavo’s website and this new newsletter.

In addition, we’re looking at ways to inventively boost CD sales on a low budget while we consider how to get the next concert off the ground and what shape that should take. And it is high time for another student concert. More info will be provided as we go along.

Highlights of Gustavo’s new website & direction of this newsletter.

• CDs & Books page professionalized.

• New: Become a sponsor page with an overview of projects under consideration.

• Firm intention to completely translate all fixed 20 pages into both Spanish and Dutch (ourselves).

Since we won’t always have events to announce, but aspire to do a better job of staying in touch, we had to come up with a formula for the content of this newsletter.

We will certainly be showcasing Latin American music and composers and potentially musicians. And it has been suggested that the story behind KyG might be an interesting one.

For example, not many people realize that before Gustavo became a conservatory piano instructor at the Superior Institute for Art in Havana, he had to pass three national selection rounds.

WAAR ZIJN WE MEE BEZIG GEWEEST?

Wat we hebben gedaan sinds het laatste concert en een kijkje in onze toekomstige intenties.
 

Allereerst over de drieledige structuur. We beseffen terdege dat de meesten zich hebben aangemeld voor deze mailinglijst uit interesse voor Gustavo als concertpianist. De waarheid is echter dat sinds we elkaar in 1999 ontmoetten, het lot van KyG onvermijdelijk met elkaar verweven is en elk product dat uit onze handen komt – concert, CD, boek, website, afbeelding – meestal min of meer het resultaat is van een tweepersoons samenwerking.

We hebben nu twee websites in de lucht. De derde, de KyG bedrijfswebsite – die een webshop en mogelijk een fotobank zal hebben – zit er aan te komen. Je begrijpt misschien – gezien het feit dat KyG momenteel persoonlijk verantwoordelijk is voor alle inhoud (tekst, afbeeldingen, vertalingen etc) en uitvoering (het fysiek  invoeren van alle inhoud, op de websites en hier), dat wij het te arbeidsintensief vinden om twee of drie afzonderlijke nieuwsbrieven erop na te houden.

We hebben een tijdje niks van ons laten horen omdat   
   A) we nodig moesten uitrusten en bijtanken en 
   B) we bezig waren met voorbereiding en ontwikkeling. 
 

Sinds eind 2008 zijn we praktisch non-stop bezig geweest,  toen we begonnen met de eerste versie van Gustavo’s website. 2011 en de eerste helft van 2012 waren bijzonder zwaar, met een cd-productie, vijf concerten - waaronder een lanceringsconcert en een concert in het buitenland - en de officiële bedrijfsvestiging. KyG draagt ​​alle aspecten van de organisatie zelf. Met een bijna-voltijd baan van Karen en Gustavo’s pianolessen ernaast moge het duidelijk zijn waarom dat bijtanken aan de orde was.
 
Onze belangrijkste bedoeling blijft om Gustavo en de Latijns-Amerikaanse muziek die hij speelt door zo veel mogelijk mensen gehoord te krijgen. Terwijl we nog steeds wachten op uitnodigingen op basis van de promotiepakketten die we wereldwijd verstuurd hebben maar begrijpen dat muziekprogrammeurs  voor hun eigen uitdagingen staan, besloten we logischerwijs om ons eigen ding te doen en zijn we van plan om hiermee door te gaan.

Ondertussen is de uitdaging – net als voor alle kunstenaars – een financiële. Het op lange termijn, voltijd dragen van een drievoudige pet is onhoudbaar, dus Karen is dankbaar uit te werknemersmolen gestapt om zich op het bedrijf en haar artistieke carrière te richten. Dit betekent dat we vanaf medio 2012 op zoek zijn gegaan naar alternatieve wegen om geld te genereren.
 
Ook zijn we bezig geweest met het verzamelen van informatie om een meer commerciële (niet alleen strikt creatieve) mentaliteit aan te kweken omdat we goed zijn in het creëren, minder in het onszelf verkopen. Het is deze weg die heeft geleid tot de vernieuwing van Gustavo’s website en deze nieuwe nieuwsbrief.

Daarnaast zijn we op zoek naar inventieve manieren om de cd-verkoop op een laag budget te stimuleren terwijl we nadenken over hoe we het volgende concert van de grond krijgen en welke vorm dat zal gaan nemen. En het is hoog tijd voor een nieuw studentenconcert. Meer informatie zal worden verstrekt naarmate we vorderen.

PROJECT 'REVAMP'

Een paar punten van Gustavo’s nieuwe website uitgelicht en richting van deze nieuwsbrief.

Website uitgelicht:
 

• Nieuwe visualiteit en atmosfeer in kleuren, beelden en een beetje meer gepersonaliseerde tekst.

• Agenda, muziek en nieuws hebben nu hun eigen pagina's.

• CD's & Boeken pagina geprofessionaliseerd.

• Nieuw: Become a sponsor (Word sponsor) pagina met een overzicht van projecten die momenteel worden overwogen.

• Vast voornemen om alle 20 basispagina's (zelf) volledig te vertalen in zowel het Spaans als Nederlands.
   

Omdat we niet altijd evenementen zullen kunnen aankondigen, maar wel streven naar beter contact houden, moesten we een formule verzinnen voor de inhoud van deze nieuwsbrief.

Zeker is dat we informatie zullen gaan verschaffen over Latijns-Amerikaanse muziek, componisten en potentieel musici.

Verder is er gesuggereerd dat het verhaal achter KyG interessant zou kunnen zijn. Bijvoorbeeld, niet veel mensen beseffen dat voordat Gustavo piano docent werd aan het Instituto Superior de Arte (Hoger Instituut voor Kunst/conservatorium) in Havana, hij drie selectierondes voorbij moest.

Se ha sugerido que la historia detrás de KyG podría ser interesante. Por ejemplo, no mucha gente sabe que antes de que Gustavo se convirtiera en profesor de piano en el Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, tuvo que superar tres rondas nacionales de selección.

QUÉ HEMOS ESTADO HACIENDO?

Lo que hemos estado haciendo desde el último concierto y un vistazo a nuestras intenciones para el futuro. 
 

En primer lugar, sobre la estructura en tres niveles. Le damos gracias por leer hasta aquí. Estamos conscientes de que la mayoría de ustedes se registraron en nuestra lista de correo, debido a su interés por Gustavo como concertista de piano. La verdad es sin embargo, que desde que nos conocimos en 1999, los destinos de KyG han estado inevitablemente entrelazados y cada producto que sale de nuestras manos – concierto, CD, libro, página web, imagen – es más o menos el resultado de la colaboración entre dos personas.

Actualmente tenemos dos sitios web en marcha. El tercero, el sitio web de la compañía KyG – que tendrá una tienda online y potencialmente un banco de fotografías – está siendo concebido. Usted tal vez pueda comprender – en vista de que KyG es personalmente responsable por todo el contenido (texto, imágenes, traducciones, etc) y ejecución (es decir, la introducción física  de todo el material en las páginas web y aquí), que se consideró demasiado laborioso  mantener dos o tres boletines separados.

No hemos estado en contacto por un tiempo porque
   A) estábamos descansando y recargando, 
   B) preparando y desarrollando.
 

Habíamos estado yendo en ello prácticamente sin parar desde el final de 2008, cuando lanzamos la primera versión de la página web de Gustavo. 2011 y el primer semestre de 2012 fueron particularmente duros, con una producción de CD, cinco conciertos incluyendo el del lanzamiento, el concierto en el extranjero y la oficialización de la empresa. KyG carga todo aspecto de la organización ella misma. Con Karen también manteniendo un trabajo a tiempo completo y las clases de piano de Gustavo, era hora para un poco de reabastecimiento.

Nuestra intención principal sigue siendo conseguir que Gustavo y la música latinoamericana que toca sean escuchadas por la mayor cantidad de personas posible. Aunque todavía estamos esperando invitaciones a base de los paquetes promocionales que enviamos por todo el mundo, entendemos que los programadores de música se enfrentan a sus propios desafíos, y lógicamente decidimos hacer nuestra propia cosa y es nuestra intención seguir haciéndolo.

El desafío, mientras tanto – como para todos los artistas – es financiero. Mantener a largo plazo y a tiempo completo un triple rol es insostenible, por lo que Karen tuvo que abandonar su trabajo en empleo para enfocarse en la empresa y su carrera artística. Esto significa que desde mediados de 2012 hemos estado buscando cómo generar dinero a través de vías alternativas.

Además, hemos estado recopilando información para asumir  una mentalidad más comercial (no sólo estrictamente creativa). Crear nos es natural, pero podemos aprender bastante en cuanto a la venta de nosotros mismos. Este es el camino que ha llevado a la renovación de la página web de Gustavo y este nuevo boletín.

También estamos buscando la manera de aumentar las ventas de CD de forma inventiva con un presupuesto bajo, mientras consideramos cómo lograr el próximo concierto y qué  forma debería tomar. Y ya es hora para otro concierto estudiantil. Más información será proporcionada a medida que avancemos.
