March 2017

Spring is here! As a quote nicely puts it, "Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn."

Before you read further, I wanted to let you know that we are not in the business of emailing you all the time. March 15th was Roanoke Valley Gives Day and we wanted all our supporters to know it. Sorry if you felt it might have been email overload.

The results for RV Gives were amazing! On the whole the goal was for community giving of $500,000. The total at the end of the day was over $720,000. What a tremendous blessing to non profits in our community. And Blue Ridge Women's Center did well for our first time. We just missed the leader board of the Top Ten. We came in 11th with over $7500 (we had a few checks trickle in to the Center as donations). THANK YOU!!!

Together For Life

That is the theme for this year's Walk for Life. The walk date is Saturday, April 29th. Come rain or shine, we hope you will mark your calendar and join us.

This year we are also excited to announce that we will have two walk locations. One in Roanoke at Fallon Park and the other in Franklin County at the Franklin County Recreation Park. Choose your location when you register.

We are still looking for church liaisons and volunteers to help on walk day. Please email me if you would like to get involved in other ways besides walking. Let's all join together for life this year and make this the largest walk yet.

See you on the 29th!

God is on the Move

Blue Ridge Women's Center is here for women who face unplanned pregnancies. Women from all ages, races, religions, and economic levels come to the Center. We look at each appointment as a divine opportunity. And we never know how God will move.

We feel that it is the right of a woman to know the truth about all of her options. That way she can make an informed choice. Sometimes clients have scheduled abortions before scheduling appointments here; however, they want more information. Our counselors go over their choices with them. Now these women are informed about the decision they have to make.

Recently, we have had several women come in leaning towards abortion. They feel there is no other choice for them. But they listen to the counselor and ask questions as they discuss all their options. Some of those clients have changed their minds. After thinking about all their choices, they now choose life. THANK YOU for partnering with us. Together for life, it is making a difference.

God's Nudges

We are excited to be working with Associates in Brief Therapy. They are another of our Strategic Partners in the community.

Rachel Schallon will be partnering with BRWC providing additional counseling services to our clients on an as needed basis. Rachel is a M.A. Resident Counselor with experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She offers individual, couples and family therapy to children, adolescents and adults. She has experience working with depression, anxiety, stress, grief and adjustment concerns. We are looking forward to what God has in store with this opportunity!

Here is a little on how Rachel became involved at BRWC:

Through my work in the Mom’s Ministry I lead in my church, I began to research supportive outlets in my community for motherhood. One day I happened upon the website for The Blue Ridge Women’s Center. I was not only encouraged by the work they were doing in my community, but felt a nudge to get involved. A few days later, my clinical director in the private practice where I work, spoke to me about a need for a counselor at BRWC. We both knew God was nudging me toward an opportunity to support women through their pregnancy journeys.
My job as a counselor is to come alongside a client and meet them where they are on their journey in life. My goal is to provide my client with support and encouragement without judgement. I understand the strength and courage behind the decision to get help. Several years ago I was on the other side of the counselor’s office as I struggled with post-partum depression and anxiety. I wish I could tell you that I got help right away, but sadly I suffered in silence until one day I could not fight it any longer. Admitting and getting help took what felt like a giant leap, but I am so glad I did. I found a supportive counselor who made me feel heard, respected, and understood. That is exactly how I approach my clients and the moms at my church. I want them to know that they are worth it, precious, and understood.
