RIO DE JANEIRO (Brazil). Paulinho Moska and Sandra de Sá exchanged blessings and impressions about life and music. Zeca Pagodinho was all smiles while posing for pictures with the beautiful Iza and Mariana Volker in their heels rising high above him. Cartoonist Lan, 92 years of age and filled with joy, revisited his collection of 88 drawings he made of the great names of Brazilan music, all restored and decorating the new space. The inauguration of Casa UBC on November 28th was in style. Full of composers, as it should be, the new artistic space occupies a full floor in the new offices of our society in the historic downtown area of Rio and opened its doors to make tribute to Gilberto Gil for his lifetime achievements with our UBC Award.

In addition to all the great creators, legendary producers like André Midani and executives from labels, publishers and streaming services were among the 100 guests that filled the cultural space. The celebration of the works of Gil is a new take on an award that existed in the 1980s, had a special character in this new era and in 2018 will have new categories.
"Our idea is to reflect a new market, moving towards the collective and less centralized than in the past century. The next events should reflect this. The UBC Award wants to highlight and serve as a tribute to all who make music happen", said Marcelo Castello Branco, CEO of UBC, who described the new era of the society, more involved with music promoting activities, support to the market and the composer's career with a "definitive view for the 21st century". "This year we are breaking a record in distribution of rights to our members, surpassing R$ 500 million" he anticipated, drawing applause from the audience.

Paulo Sérgio Valle, President of UBC, exalted the creation of Casa UBC, "a space for all composers and all who love music" and, during the opening moments of the event remembered an early encounter with Gil. "I was an airplane pilot and had written some songs, he was also starting out and I said hello. You probably don't remember this..."he was saying when he was immediately corrected by Gil: "Of course I remember! It was right by the cabin door! My memory has seen better days, but these special moments I never forget."
A series of performances of his works opened the party. Maria Rita and Davi Moraes played "O Compositor Me Disse"; Ana Vilela followed with "Um Trem Para As Estrelas"; Iza took the stage for a performance of "Palco"; Celso Fonseca went with "Vamos Fugir"; Mariana Aydar and Marcelo Jeneci sang "De Onde Vem o Baião"; Mariana Volker remembered "Meu Amigo, Meu Herói"; and Silva sang "Eu Preciso Aprender a Ser Só".

Then, Paulo Sérgio Valle returned to the stage, calling upon Gil to remember their friend and ex-president of UBC Fernando Brant, who passed away at the age of 68 years in 2015. They were soon joined by Zeca Pagodinho. "I would never imagine being beside the great Gil to deliver an award to him. So many people could do this and they chose me !" he joked, handing over UBC's Award and asking Gil to sing, which he promptly acccepted, performing the classics "Aquele Abraço" and "Palco" in sequence, closing the concert with all the previous performers joined on stage (see first picture above), and prompting all in attendance to dance and sing together.
"What a beautiful party, UBC! Thank you all", said a clearly touched Gilberto Gil, being embraced by Erasmo Carlos and many of the great composers who visited Casa UBC, like João Bosco, Geraldo Azevedo, Ronaldo Bastos, Elias Muniz, Manno Góes, Luis Carlinhos, George Israel and many others.

If the Casa UBC was full of stars, the beautiful tributes by anonymous people recorded on video for Gil was cause for much applause and laughter for the spontaneous nature of the messages. And they served as a great symbol of the importance of the works of this great composer to millions of Brazilians.
