JMI - Transforming Lives Through Jewish Music

We are the Jewish Music Institute. We curate, educate and celebrate – bringing to life this rich seam in world culture. Our mission encompasses the music of the Jewish people wherever they are and wherever they have been, preserving and developing this great genre for the benefit of present and future generations.

Welcome to JMI's April Newsletter by Joint President Michael Grade

A warm welcome to our April Newsletter
As Joint President of JMI together with Valerie Solti, we would like to express our delight at the work of this exciting and unique charity over the last year. We are dedicated to our mission of inspiring audiences with a full programme of educational and creative events, live performances and collaborative projects.
Our partnership with JW3 is very important to us and we are honoured once again to be involved in their programme for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) which takes place on Wednesday 11th April. The evening features a production of Bertolt Brecht’s “The Jewish Wife” which is supported by over six London Embassies and international cultural institutions. Yom HaShoah is always attended to capacity, so please do book on the tab below.
I am delighted to invite you to share our Musical Memories event on 16th May – personal musical choices and a lot of laughs with my friends Graham Gouldman (10cc), Valerie Solti, actress and writer Tracy-Ann Oberman and actor Henry Goodman. Tables are filling up rapidly, so we would love to hear from you quickly if you would like to join us for this special evening as space is limited in our beautiful venue. You will find booking details in this newsletter. Donations raised at this event are essential to support and expand JMI’s music educational programmes and to assist students of all ages to study Jewish music and culture. We very much look forward to hearing from you.
JMI’s Summer Schools teaching Yiddish song and language together with Klezfest are a great source of pride for me as Yiddish played a great part in my upbringing and my love of klezmer is known to all. Last year we were very proud to welcome 200 students and we look forward to another year celebrating this rich heritage. Dates are August 19 – 24. Make sure that you book before places are filled.

I would like to wish all our subscribers, friends and partners a zisn peysekh, Chag Pesach Sameach, Happy Passover and a good Easter.
Enjoy the month,

JMI's mission is to educate, entertain and inspire people of all ages and backgrounds through a diverse and exciting programme of concerts, workshops, lectures and summer schools, attractive to Jews and non-Jews alike.
Your donation can help us achieve this.

All of us at JMI would like to wish our friends, colleagues and subscribers
Chag Pesach Sameach and a Happy Easter.

First performed eighty years ago, Bertolt Brecht’s chilling one-act play, The Jewish Wife, is a chronicle of everyday German life at the dawn of the Nazi regime. As the Third Reich tightens its grip, relationships contort and fear and suspicion penetrate every layer of society.

Katharina Reinthaller directs this exclusive performance with actors: Susanne Fiore and Peter Halpin with pianist Ilan Lazarus. This will be followed by a short Yom HaShoah ceremony led by Rabbi Roni Tabick and singer Aaron Isaac.

We interviewed Director Katharina Reinthaller and Programmer Eva Burke and that podcast be heard here

Call For Young Musicians
(Looking especially for Guitar, Sax, Trumpet and Trombone)
The JMI is excited to announce the formation of the JMI YOUTH BIG BAND - a new youth ensemble dedicated to contemporary music of Jewish origin. Drawing inspiration from the great American big bands and Jewish music throughout the ages, the ensemble is led by Tzadik Label artist Sam Eastmond (The Spike Orchestra, John Zorn) and Jazz/Klezmer artist in residence Stewart Curtis (K-Groove, Brass Bottom Band, 33Records). The band's first performance took place at Klezmer in the Park and they will also be performing at the JMI Music Fair and other venues.

This is your opportunity to learn and perform under the tutelage of some world class musicians in an exciting new ensemble. We are seeking young instrumentalists on Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums of grade 5+ standard with a passion for jazz, funk and contemporary music.

As this initial stage will be free to all selected students, we would be most grateful for contributions towards the development of this very exciting new project. Please donate here (*Labelling your donation JMI Big Band)
