ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE SEPTEMBER 2013
Welcome to the September Newsletter from JMI

Welcome to a very exciting September newsletter from JMI. We are kicking the new year off in style with our annual Klezmer in the Park featuring a stellar line up including Frank London's UK Klezmer Allstars featuring for one-day only some of the UK's very best klezmer musicians in one big band, Los Desterrados, the Yiddish Twist Orchestra, The London Klezmer Quartet and new to the festival this year – The Turbans with their lively Balkan, Turkic, Gypsy and Klezmer sounds.  This year we are also launching our new Kids' Zone with lots of activities and free workshops. so be sure to get down early to experience the full day.

JW3 – the new JCC for London – opens on 29th September in their amazing new building in NW3.  We are thrilled to be partnering with JW3 to provide music programming beginning with Music with Monooka, a specially devised programme to introduce the youngest members of our community to the magic of live music and performance.  Each week Monooka, her puppet friends Micah and Maya and her trusty guitar bring a traditional Jewish folk story to life through music and song. And of course, no session would be complete without Monooka’s magical bubble machine and her colourful parachute. We’ll be celebrating Shabbat with some delicious Challah!!  We are also launching Zingt! The People's Yiddish Chorus, an all new Yiddish choir, exploring traditional songs in this1000 year old language, learning to sing in Yiddish and breathing life back into a fascinating fading language and a rich musical genre. Participants will sing a variety of traditional songs from lullabies and folk ballads to protest songs and Shabbat prayers, as well as wordless nigunim.
Led by Polina Skovoroda-Shepherd, renowned Yiddish singer, performer and choirmaster, this group is open to all singers.

This has been a very inspiring relaunch year for JMI with some amazing sell-out events, including the Klezmatics at the Union Chapel, 'His People' at the Barbican and Leonard Cohen Words and Music at Kings Place.  We have strengthened our partnerships with the UK's finest Jewish cultural organisations including Jewish Book Week, UK Jewish Film and the Jewish Museum and look forward to working together more in the coming year. Our focus on education has been reinforced with another highly successful edition of Ot Azoy and the Golden Peacock, our Yiddish summer school, as well as Der Nayer Klang, the Joe Loss Lectureship at SOAS, our Great Big Story Adventure workshop and our thriving primary schools programme.

We look forward to another packed year of activity with many more exciting collaborations and partnerships and hope you will join us on the journey.

All best wishes
Sophie

JMI: SCHOOLS MUSIC PROGRAM
ANOTIMPURILE: THE SEASONS An Educational Journey in Romanian and Yiddish storytelling, Music and Dance
This new project was created for Harrow Music Service and brought together some of the UK’s best educators in Eastern European music to inspire students with a rich program of folk tales and song. Students explored the colour and energy of the four seasons through interactive sessions that included instrumental workshops, puppetry and dance. The programme gave the opportunity for each student to learn the accordion, one of the central instruments in both Romanian and Yiddish folk music. Students also learned special songs and dances that represented the different seasons. Now, following the hugely successful pilot of this programme at Weald Junior School in Harrow last spring, JMI and Harrow Music Service are taking the program to three further schools in Harrow, starting with Aylward Primary in September. For further information about the course please visit our website here

17th Sept –26th November at AYLWARD PRIMARY
(half term on 19th October)

10 session programme culminating in a performance to the school and parents on 26th November

VOLUNTEERS: JMI NEEDS YOU!
JMI needs volunteers in a number of different roles to help us deliver our event programs and media. If you are able to steward, staff or promote our events we want to hear from you. Equally if you have a new media talent or passion for music we also want to hear from you. We welcome all our volunteers as family and treat them very well with numerous benefits such as free tickets to events, chances to develop new skills in production and media and of course, food. We like to take our volunteer team out for a communal meal periodically, to make sure that it's not just the attendees of our events that get to socialise. If you are interested in being part of the team then we currently have two projects that we would like help with: Klezmer in the Park needs volunteer stewards to help us throughout the day (Sep 1st  Regents Park) and the JMI Radio show on SOAS radio needs a producer (must be a SOAS student). If you are interested in either roles, or would like to register your interest for helping on future events then please contact us here
