“Chernobyl is a word we would all like to erase from our memory. But more than seven million of our fellow human beings do not have the luxury of forgetting. They are still suffering, every day, as a result of what happened…The exact number of victims can never be known.” – former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan

The World

Blind mice and bird brains: the silent spring of Chernobyl and Fukushima Evolutionary biologist Timothy Mousseau and his colleagues have published 90 studies that prove beyond all doubt the deleterious genetic and developmental effects on wildlife of exposure to radiation from both the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear disasters. Cataracts, small brains, tumors, cancers, sterility, dramatic reductions of birds and species, genetic damage.

Ruined Chernobyl nuclear plant will remain a threat for 3,000 years One man’s true life story.

Chernobyl's children of hope Thousands of children across Belarus have been robbed of a healthy childhood. Their food and playgrounds are contaminated, their health weakened by radiation.

The Shadow Of Chernobyl Looms Large 30 Years Later Worryingly, there are still more than four hundred aging reactors around the world putting millions at risk. And the nuclear industry is trying hard to divert funds and political support from the renewable solutions we need to tackle climate change. The human toll caused by nuclear disasters is why nuclear power can never be part of a just, sustainable and low-carbon future.

30 Ways Chernobyl and Dying Nuke Industry Threaten Our Survival

Nuclear Power: Billions to Build, Billions More to Dismantle As expensive as nuclear power plants are to build, safely shutting them down will add hundreds of billions, potentially trillions more to the facilities’ lifetime costs. Nuclear costs in unchartered territory.

Cameco suspends Rabbit Lake uranium mine operations; cuts more than 500 jobs due to an oversupply of uranium around the world, caused in part by the shutdown of nuclear facilities in Japan, and low prices.

Cameco – uranium : Did this company engineer the largest tax dodge in Canadian history?

Coal-Free Ontario with Morgan Freeman The leadership of the Ontario Clean Air Alliance in helping Ontario to become the first jurisdiction to end the use of coal-fired electricity for health and environmental reasons has not gone unnoticed. Our campaign was recently profiled in a 5 minute video produced by Al Gore’s Climate Reality project and featuring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman.

Ontario's biggest political donors revealed Bruce Power is the single largest corporate donor to Ontario’s political parties. Could that explain the sole-source contract for 35% of ON's electricity supply? The Plumbers and Pipefitters and Construction unions – all big in the nuclear industry – were the largest donors to all the parties, which would explain the non-opposition in the legislature to the province’s plans to rebuild 10 of our aging high cost nuclear reactors.

U.S. Coal Giant Peabody Energy Files For Bankruptcy The coal industry tanks due to the falling costs of green energy. The same is true for the nuclear industry that can’t compete – that’s why they rely on sole-source secret contracts .

Global wind capacity to nearly double in next five years

Indian example shows solar power cheaper than coal – and half the price of nuclear

Take Action!

Tell the presidents of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia to protect Chernobyl survivors from radiation exposure and make sure another Chernobyl never happens again by investing in renewable energy.

Close the old and dangerous Pickering Nuclear Station – Please Sign the Petition to Close Pickering when its license expires in 2018 rather than extend its life 'till 2024 which is the gov't's plan.

☢ Please send Premier Wynne a message asking her to order OPG to develop an immediate decommissioning plan for Pickering and to close this dinosaur by 2018 (when its license expires) at the latest.

Let's build stronger ties between Ontario and Quebec Send your letter asking Federal Ministers Morneau and Sohi to support electricity transmission system upgrades that will permit increased electricity trade between Ontario and Quebec.

Stop the Next Chernobyl – in Belgium Please sign the petition to shut down 2 ancient nuclear plants.

Tell Premier Wynne to protect all Ontarians The Ontario government is giving iodine pills to anyone living within 10km of a nuclear power plant -- but studies show that anyone living within 50km is at risk in a nuclear emergency.

Chernobyl: Conversations and Children - 30 Years Later Wed. April 27, 7 – 9 p.m. Beit Zatoun, 612 Markham (at Bloor), Toronto. 30 years ago (April 26, 1986), the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded. Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus have been burdened with the continuing and substantial decontamination and health care costs. To honor those impacted, we are screening the 2014 Japanese documentary 'Children of Chernobyl 28 Years Later: A report on low-level, long-term radiation exposure.' Speakers to follow.
