FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St James’,

First and foremost, I would like to thank all of you who attended our open house. Your support and presence were joyfully overwhelming and graciously kind. We had so many delightful conversations and received so many wonderful gifts. Diana and I thank you immensely. A number of the gifts came without cards, or the cards were later found detached from the gift, but please know we are utterly grateful for your goodness and generosity.

If you are in our neighborhood, stop in to say, hello. If you see our garage doors open with our cars in the bays, we are home. So, just go through the garage and come on in.

While visiting with many of you, the question arose, what is a parochial vicar? How is that different from a curate? In English canon (church) law the difference has to do with how they derive their stipends. In the American church it might best be explained that as “vicar” I stand in vicariously for the rector.

I do not substitute for the rector, but stand in his place related to the pastoral care of the parish. In practical terms, a parochial (parish) vicar is usually a more experienced priest and pastorally acts on behalf of the rector in assisting the rector with the care of souls. This responsibility was entrusted to him at his institution. A curate is usually just out of seminary and needs more guidance and direction in his new ministry. In both cases the parochial vicar or curate work directly for the rector. I hope that helps somewhat.

The other question was related to my intended chaplaincy with the TTPD. I look forward to being a spiritual presence to the men and women of the TTPD. Right now, that role is developing, but it will not detract from parish duties. Keep our officers in your prayers.

During Fr. Doug’s absence, if a pastoral emergency arises, please do no hesitate to contact me, either through the office, or my cell phone number, 773-307-3304. Additionally, let us keep Father, his dad, Harry, along with Emma and Maddie in our prayers as they walk in holy pilgrimage to the shrine of our patron St. James. May they come to encounter the risen Lord in their journey. Finally, through the intercession of our patron, the holy Apostle James, may each of us come to know the promises Christ.

In our blessed Lord,

Fr. Richard Daly

BY WAY OF REMINDER: It is our custom to send out reminders to those serving the following Sunday on three occasions: Tuesdays (by email), Wednesdays (via the Knee Mail), then then again on Thursdays (by email, with the Bulletin). It helps the Office to know of any conflicts sooner rather than later!
