Kneemail from Saint James Church

October 3, AD 2018

FROM THE RECTOR:

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St James’,

Just to bring you up to date on a few things:

You have—or will soon receive—your third quarter statement of financial giving.  With it is a letter from the Treasurer.  Please read, learn, mark and inwardly digest the contents of his letter!

I am in active exploration of bringing an additional priest on staff in the coming year. I think we are all agreed that St James’ is a two priest parish. (If you are not, you are welcome to follow me around for a day!)  The responsibilities of the clergy not only include the church, but also work at the day school, the Randy Sams’ Shelter and All Saints’, Atlanta.

Since Fr David’s departure, there has been no diminution of activity at any of these entities.  Everything continues in the same way as if there were two priests here.  I thank those who have stepped up to keep our mission and ministry going, and going strong.  And to be clear, I am in no way complaining—I will continue to be a happy warrior and give my best to God and you.  But in the long term, this pace is not sustainable for one priest.

The process of calling a second priest involves the Rector, the Vestry, the Bishop, and the priest in question.  One of the things the Diocese will be looking at is the financial sustainability of creating such a position.  Thus, this year, in light of our need of a second priest, both the number of signed pledged cards received and the aggregate amount of giving on those cards will be very important.  Please be thinking and praying about this over the coming days.

Apropos of this, on Sunday, October 13th, The Rev’d Michael Gilton, Canon to the Ordinary of the Diocese of Dallas, will be visiting St James’. (The “Ordinary” is the Diocesan Bishop, meaning that Fr Gilton is the Bishop’s Canon, or right-hand man, akin to the Chief Operating Officer of the Diocese.)  He is here to get the lay of the land, and he and I will be talking about our needs in Texarkana.  He will preach at both Masses on that Sunday; I will be celebrant.  It would be nice if he encountered a full church on that day, underlining the fact that St James’ is in need of two priests!  Something else to be thinking of ...

Finally, you will note on the (very full) calendar below, that we have scheduled a Ladies’ Wine & Cheese for the evening of Tuesday, October 9th.  Please bring your beverage of choice, as well as something to nibble on. I hope you can join us.

Yours with every blessing,

Rev. Douglas Anderson, Rector

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION NOTICES

In the Wednesday night adult class:  LESSER KNOWN BOOKS OF THE BIBLE—This week: John 3
6:30 pm in the Parish Hall (following Wed. night Mass and supper).

In the Sunday morning adult class:   THE SUPPER OF THE LAMB—Reading the Book of Revelation through the Church Fathers.
Strange beasts that rise out of the sea, clouds of incense, horsemen, plagues, a killer lamb (!)—how are we to make sense of the Apocalypse, the final book of Scripture?  This course will read the Book of Revelation through the eyes of the Church Fathers, exploring the rich tapestry and prophecy, history and allusion found in the book and explore the profound link between the Mass and the eternal reality of heaven.

EACH SUNDAY CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD. Children ages 4 through grade 3 are invited to attend Children’s Liturgy of the Word during the first portion of the 10:00 service. The children process to the chapel for a service conducted by a lay adult. The Liturgy of the Word is a “child friendly” service with prayers, singing and a reading of the gospel followed by a short homily. The children rejoin their parents at the Peace.
