Printable author branding program returns for 2022

Queensland Writers Centre is proud to announce our 3rd annual Printable program, returning in 2022 with a sharp focus on preparing you and your author brand, giving you an edge in the literary market.

Applicants will participate in a complete program including one-on-one Consults, a comprehensive full day course including workshops with industry experts, with add-on opportunities for professional author headshots and follow-up support with your marketing.

Brisbane Children's Writers Festival - one month to go!

The Craft Side of Writing
with Lian Tanner

When: 5:30pm, Friday 7 October

With award-winning children's writer Lian Tanner, this workshop will focus on some of the most important aspects of craft, including structure, conflict, and cause and effect.

Weekend Writing Challenge (new!)

When: 10:00am, 25-26 November

Join a supportive group of committed writers for two full days of fast-paced writing, transport yourself into your next writing project, and help raise money for Queensland Writers Centre's Fellowship & Access Fund.

2022 Queensland Literary Awards Presentation

When: 7:00pm, Thursday 8 September
Where: Online live stream

Join State Library of Queensland via live stream as the winners of the 2022 Queensland Literary Awards are revealed, celebrating outstanding writers from Queensland and around Australia.

ST. ALi Italian Film Festival - Brisbane

When: 13 September - 12 October
Where: Palace Cinemas, Brisbane

The ST. ALi Italian Film Festival, presented by Palace Cinemas, presents new contemporary Italian cinema and cherished classics on the big screen, celebrating Italian language, culture and la dolce vita.

Right Left Write

Our new September genre prompt is Sci-Fi. Immerse yourself in the theme, experiment, play or subvert expectations!

Submissions of short fiction (max. 500 words) close at the end of the month, midnight on 30 September 
submit your entry now.

Community news

Brisbane author Catherine Rull's novels Mr. Write and No Friend of Mine have finalled in the Contemporary Romance and Mainstream Fiction with Central Romance categories respectively in the Georgia Romance Writers' Published Maggie Contest. Mr. Write was also a finalist for Virginia Romance Writers' HOLT Medallion earlier in the year.

Jane Smith's Ship of Death: The Tragedy of the Emigrant has been named as one of four books shortlisted for the biennial Frank Broeze Memorial Maritime History Book Prize by the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Australian Association for Maritime History.
Lee and Amanda Breeze's second and final novel of their Burn the Sky series, Burn the Sky: Redemption, was published in August, with 2 book launches to be held in September.

Deborah Huff-Horwood has received a scholarship from Tabitha Bird for mentorship for her YA queer romance novel Jemima Is Stardust. Deborah's short story Her Scented Walk will be published in anthology no. 111 of AAWP: ACE, and her memoir piece A Finely Tortured Thing has been shortlisted for the Gloria Anderlini Short Story Award.

Competitions & opportunities

SBS Emerging Writers' Competition

Closes: 13 September

The competition 'aims to uncover bold new voices that reflect the diversity of contemporary Australia'. Accepts submissions on this year's theme of Emergence between 1000-2000 words. $5,000 first prize, $3,000 second prize and two runners up prizes of $1,000, with winners published in an anthology by Hardie Grant. 

Noosa Arts Theatre - One-Act Playwriting Competition

Closes: 1 October

This playwriting competition offers a unique opportunity for three finalist playwrights to see their new work performed on stage at the Noosa Arts Theatre during the One-Act Play Festival. First prize of $5,000.

Martha Richardson Poetry Prize 2022

Closes: 1 October

The Martha Richardson Poetry Prize is now open for entries of poetry up to 40 lines on the theme ‘Inflate.‘ In 2022 the judge is poet and creative writing teacher Andy Jackson; the competition is open to both Australian and international writers over 18, writing in English. First prize of $1,000.

Marj Wilke Short Story Award

Closes: 11 October

Annual competition organised by Women Writers Queensland. Open to submissions of short stories up to 1,500 words from Australian women writers over the age of 18 years.
