All Blues since:
Kendra is no stranger to rugby, growing up in Fiji where it is the national sport. Her parents loved the game and she grew up watching 7s. When she stopped running track and field, she decided to give rugby a try. When she moved to the Bay Area, she first started practicing with the Cal Women’s rugby team. At the time she was looking for a way to play more competitive rugby, and at Brandon Sparks’ suggestion (Cal rugby’s coach at the time), she checked out an All Blues practice and found that she loved it.
Kendra said that she liked how players on the team claim to be playing their “last season” only to come back for another. But this way, she “always get[s] to play with the OGs.” She listed a lot of “All Blues OGs” that have helped her grow in the game, especially when she was starting out as one of the youngest players on the team. She especially noted Irene Gardner, Ruth Bryson, and Jessica (JT) Turner. She called Irene “a magician,” and by playing next to her she learned a lot about seeing the open space on the field. Ruth Bryson’s “tricky ways” were “fun” and helped her see how to manipulate the defense. JT “always plays with swag” and “if you have a question about footy, she’s got 20 answers.”
As an All Blue, Kendra’s best memories included getting a huge black eye from her first game. She also noted 7s Nationals in 2014, which involved getting lost in the beer garden with Frances and then flying home the following morning painted blue, as per the social theme.
Her spirit animal is an elk and she knows this because she googled it.
The monthly Player Profile series aims to highlight an All Blue currently playing during each of the 3 seasons. Curious about someone in our community? Let us know who you'd like featured!
